After.......27 years as a menthol smoker I've made the switch to non-menthol.

Has any other long time smoker switched over?

I never smoked menthols (other than OP's) but I did switch to filtered from unfiltered somewhere in the late 80's. I've also quit (again) so we'll see how long that lasts.

Congrats on quiting. (again)

the end goal is to quit, the idea is to have a cig that I can smoke but don't enjoy that much yet still enjoy enough that I just won't go back to my preferred (menthol) brand.

I'm giving myself a 10 month timeline.

Can't do it cold turkey.

I used to smoke crushes (start smoking it normal, then crush to menthol 2/3rds of the way in) but I'm (in the process of) quitting. I got a vape pen but I don't really use it too much. I still smoke when I'm out drinking and my friends have cigs, but cut it out during the week or when I'm by myself.

I would have thought that it's worse to go from menthol to non-menthol??? Whatever works I guess.

i do this in almost every "i might consider quitting smoking" thread, so i apologize in advance for spambot Helix. however, "The Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr saved my ass. best fifteen bucks i ever spent. might be twenty by now, since that was 2008. if you decide to quit, that book made it a lot easier for me. highly recommended.

I've tried the vape. I tried to use it to ween off.

I ended up smoking double!

I smoke cigars from time to time and a pipe occasionally during the warm months and I could be puffing for hours on either and still light up a cigarette when I finished. For the menthol.

to be honest, i'm still a bit surprised that i escaped. a couple online friends kept recommending it to me, so i return the favor when threads like this pop up. September (27?) of 1994 - June 16, 2008.

Switched from menthol to clean air, and from carbs to the gym. As a reward, I got perfect blood pressure, perfect blood tests, and perfect BMI.

One afternoon, about 2.00 pm I think it was, in February 1987, I looked down at the cigarette held between my fingers and thought to myself "You're a bloody idiot." I put the cigarette out and never had another one. 30 years next month without a cigarette. Willpower is the way to go. I actually got drunk once...no, twice in my 20s. Thought the same about alcohol and never had another drink, that was about 35 years ago.

I must admit I lived on Fruit Tingles (lollies) for two weeks. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I furiously chomped on a packet of fruit tingles.

Forgot to add that I smoked a minimum of 50 cigarettes a day...at least two packets.

I read some reviews already on Amazon. $12.22 paperback. Put it in the wishlist. Looks positive.

Hopefully I can return the favor to someone as well.

Good on you.

Had the first two perfects smoking a pack and a half a day all the while training for a 70.3...;) (Which I ended up backing out of)

I could have completed but not competed.

I want to compete. (age group)

I remember those days. I was a young Navy guy when I could run, have great health, and smoke Kools. Mother nature always comes calling at some point though. I am rebellious, so I quit smoking just to spite mother nature.

I just finished reading his "No More Hangovers". Need to make the commitment to squash my 3 glasses of wine a day habit.

I quit 10 years ago.

I have a similiar problem with dip, I can get a mouthfull of copenhagen and still smoke a cigarette. I do not have that problem with cigars or pipe, infact I mostly smoke a pipe and switch back every so often to cigarettes. Like to smoke butter rum and cherry aromatic tobaccos in briar and burley blends in a corn cob, and I can puff them for weeks without ever wanting a cigarette.

i'll admit to being a bit apprehensive about reading that book. if you do read it, let me know what you think of it.

Took two weeks' vacation, stopped, bit the bullet, and didn't sleep for quite a while....

Less than fun but it worked.

I guess I can post on this sub forum without having a mod close the thread. Weird. Mods, are you guys only closing threads that I post on if the thread is relating to politics?

That sounds like me back as a youngster. Skoal mint and Newports...

Yeah, I'd like to keep it just to the occasional pipe or cigar, just get off the cigs...

I quit 8 years ago. I started at 15 to cover up the smell of marijuana. What a mistake. I had no trouble quitting marijuana when I went in the army. It took me 33 years to finally quit smoking. I had a tough time quitting alcohol but nothing holds a candle to those cigarettes. I tried everything under the sun before finally quitting.

I quit back when I was only 3 years in. Had to. Bootcamp. Started back up on Ricky Weekend...

1. Cold turkey is the only way. Otherwise, you're continting to practice your bad habit... which is not quitting, so much as learning how to live with your habit in a different way

2. Your brain has a 3 minute timer on wants/needs. Otherwise, every time you got hungry you would literally go insane until you got food. Cravings for nicotine are also on this three minute timer. If you can make it three minutes, you can quit smoking. At first, you may have several three minute battles in a row, almost back to back. They get farther and farther apart over time.

Think of it as a series of three minute battles, and not a month long war. Nobody can win a fight that takes that long... and to share a dark secret with you, the cravings never really go away. I've been quit for 3 years, and I still get the occasional craving. I have had exactly three cigars in that three years, the first one two years in.

Also, cancel your subscription to HBO. Everybody smokes, like, all the time.

(Also, I tapered off with a vape for about six months.)
