Smokers: Who has made the switch?

I quit 8 years ago. I started at 15 to cover up the smell of marijuana. What a mistake. I had no trouble quitting marijuana when I went in the army. It took me 33 years to finally quit smoking. I had a tough time quitting alcohol but nothing holds a candle to those cigarettes. I tried everything under the sun before finally quitting.

Cigarettes are actually terrible at covering up pot smoke, aromatic pipe tobacco or aromatic cigars tend to do a much better job, but even then odds are people noticed but just did not care.

My parents didn't smoke so they would smell the marijuana on my clothes. Once I got around people who smoked cigarettes the cigarette smell would get in my clothes and mask the marijuana. I used to smoke cigars fishing because of bugs. The funny thing was everyone was OK with me smoking as long as it wasn't marijuana. Most of my family was OK with drinking as well. The 2 drugs in my life that cost me the most money and most likely did the most damage to my body everyone was fine with. Cigarettes and alcohol have caused more pain, death, and suffering to my friends and family than illegal drugs by an incredible margin. SAD!

One afternoon, about 2.00 pm I think it was, in February 1987, I looked down at the cigarette held between my fingers and thought to myself "You're a bloody idiot." I put the cigarette out and never had another one. 30 years next month without a cigarette. Willpower is the way to go. I actually got drunk once...no, twice in my 20s. Thought the same about alcohol and never had another drink, that was about 35 years ago.

I must admit I lived on Fruit Tingles (lollies) for two weeks. Every time I wanted a cigarette, I furiously chomped on a packet of fruit tingles.

Forgot to add that I smoked a minimum of 50 cigarettes a day...at least two packets.

You had a lot easier time of it than many did. I think what stopped my father from smoking was 10 days in an oxygen tent.

I smoked cigarettes long before I ever touched weed, but to put it mildly, my parents flipped out when they found out I was smoking, Said go ahead keep doing it but pay your own way, So I would collect dimes and quarters off the ground to buy the then $1.35 pouches of top rolling tobacco which the state of cali had not taxed yet.

Weed man I Thought I could get away with it, but I walked into the house and my father confronts me and says I know you are smoking weed I can smell it. Shocked like I was busted for life he then just asks me if I had anymore and if he could have some.

But for someone who is very familiar with the smell of weed, even the strongest womens perfume will not mask it, yeah you could smell that woman a mile away, but when she got close you would still smell the weed through it.

Heh..

I quit a 16 year 1.5 pack/day habit ~10 years ago using the nicotine gum. I just followed the instructions. Worked for me!

Pro Tip: Order the knockoff brands online from overseas, it's the same nicotine and you can find it for about 30% the cost of Nicorette, even with shipping from New Zealand.

Also, I wish I had known about r/stopsmoking/ when I quit. Very supportive folk there.
