This occurs all the time and is the cause of many traffic accidents. the best way to keep drunk drivers off the road is to have a breathalyser fitted to each car near the driver's seat, which is quite cheap, or not receive a sticker that says they are allowed to drive.

At a bar, the owner must ask the drinker for their keys, or, not sell them alcohol. it is up to the owner when to give the drinker their keys back, and, they may demand they drink water or coffee to neutralize the mixture inside them.

If the drinker was to exercise before they drive, or, be forced to take a nap before they drive, the problem would be severely cut down. then, there is also the option for blitzes by police on bars to 'catch' people with car keys drinking too much?

NO, this is all bad advice

if you drink, you don't drive, period

if you drink heavily you should not be driving even the next morning

Ok then.

Coffee doesn't actually reduce your impairment, neither does water, those are myths.

Taking a nap will reduce impairment from heavy drinking, if it's like 8 hours long. I somehow doubt bar keeps want to start operating a hotel on site

People who drive drunk are a problem that has no simple solution.

Good judgement would preclude someone who has been drinking from getting behind the wheel.
But, alcohol impairs judgement.

Why not? Make a few extra bucks.

I'd be fine with 0 tolerance BAC levels, meaning if you've been drinking alcohol at all you do not drive, period. Drinking and driving should also be a felony and considered a form of reckless endangerment and a form of attempted manslaughter. Too many people have lost their lives due to drinking and driving, and the penalties aren't nearly harsh enough for those who hadn't taken a life.

agreed yes,

but hey bartenders....well they could make some extra cash...;)

it is not really the nap that reduces the impairment, it is the length of time since alcohol has entered the blood stream

Saturday morning is one of the highest accident days of the week...people are/can still be drunk, they just aren't aware of it

here's just one quick google:
In general, alcohol is removed from the blood at the rate of about one unit an hour. But this varies from person to person. It can depend on your size and gender, as men tend to process alcohol quicker than women; how much food you’ve eaten; the state of your liver, and your metabolism (how quickly or slowly your body turns food into energy).
“Imagine you’re drinking until three or four in the morning and you wake up at 8am,” says Dr Wallace. “If you’ve had six or seven units, you could still have several units of alcohol in your body when you start your day. This is because your body can only process around one unit an hour. With several units of alcohol still in your body you would still be over the drink drive limit.”

it's time for people and society to quit glamorizing alcohol. it's no different than abusing opiates.
and having a bar out in the middle of nowhere is just begging for people to drive drunk.

My understanding is that coffee makes things much worse. If you're drunk you may be too drowsy to even want to drive. With big ol' caffeine burst now you're drunk and awake enough to drive.

As someone who deals with drunk and drunk drivers rather frequently, may I just say... no.

All bad ideas.

Alcohol is a mental depressant, adding a stimulant like caffeine (and sometimes illicit drugs) doesn't fix anything and may make things worse or even result in fatal drug reactions. You can't cheat alcohol, you have to let it all metabolize out of the system.

Years ago there was a mess at Central Washington University where several students were drinking a drink called 4 loko which was an alcoholic energy drink, people were taken to hospital girls claimed they were assaulted while blacked out, boys claimed they were blacked out and knew nothing about it, that drink ended up being banned in WA. The caffeine was causing people to binge drink because they went from alert to blacked out drunk with little in between or buzz

Trying to end the national sport of Texas, how dare you

And yet every bar can still serve vodka + redbull

There was an energy beer called sparks that was delicious, I miss it

Running a red lamp or driving too fast causes traffic deaths too, both should be felonies. And so should texting and driving

Not only should it be a serious felony, but first offense, you lose your license forever, period.

Texting while driving is absolutely unforgivable.

People need to be reminded that they are wielding a potentially deadly weapon, to do so in a intentionally careless fashion is unconscionable.

Good grief, the .08 standard is bogus and overreaching as it is. What a ridiculous suggestion.

So the death penalty for texting while driving? I don't know how else you make it "unforgivable"

We live in a motorized society, with few other transportation options in most areas, that means that we tend to view driving more as a right, then other countries where driving is a luxury of the upper class. And so vehicle offenses tend to carry lighter penalties then say accidents with a gun even though cars are arguably more dangerous. We also are more willing to forgive misdeeds by car because of a belief anyone can make the same mistake. Also you complain about prison overcrowding? Wait until vehicle offenders start going into the pen

The social consequences of that will far exceed whatever benefit you get from reducing DUI crashes and you probably won't even due that, most of these people will just start driving without licenses and insurance

You can add in being under the influence of drugs to the list. As more States are passing or trying pass the recreational use of marijuana this may become more of an issue. In AZ the law being considered is poorly written on defining "under the influence".

A life sentence for drinking a beer and then attempts to drive home sounds reasonable. ;)

What about one who texts or eats while driving, speeds or runs a stop sign on that trip?

Breathalyzer in the car violates the 4A.

Water and coffee neutralize nothing.

This OP is riddled with lies and inaccuracies.

I think the penalties are too strict as is. Sounds like many of you would lock up half the country if given the chance.
