I love space adventure, battles, and badass characters. I greatly enjoyed Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars The Force Awakens. I think The Expanse and Ancillery Justice novels are awesome but I seem to notice that alien life seems to be missing from the new space opera? What happened? Did society become more cynical? Do modern writers have less imagination?

It goes in cycles. No worries. What goes around eventually comes around.

Perhaps. But it is more than just SCI-FI writers who have become more cynical. It is society as a whole.

There are a lot of Sci fi writers out there and they cover just about everything.
I just finished Firestar by Michael Fylnn, very optimistic about the near future.
While it is a little older James Hogan had some good forward looking Sci fi.
