I can't keep her long. She's not a bad dog, but she's big. She also got food aggressive towards my poms. This is not acceptable. If anyone needs/wants a labby who needs love PLEASE PM ME.

Re: South Texas DP'ers, looking for a Chocolate Lab? Someone dumped one on my porch

I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and I hated it when folks would approach me (at PetSmart where we'd take adoptable animals on weekends) and tell me they could not adopt a dog and why. It's like they believed I must have looked at them and thought they must just be the best dog caretakers ever if only I could convince them to take one. My point? I'm gonna do that very same thing I hated here and say I already have one hot headed terrier (or terror) mix that would not accept another dog. Props for trying to find her a good place though, Renae. She is a beauty.

Good work on taking her in for now, Renae.

I hope it all works out.

She looks very skinny...no wonder she has food aggression.

Thing is, it was more than fighting over food. Wife and one Pom in Kitchen. We put a gate up to keep her out. It's a baby gate, was placed high enough for poms to go under but not her. Well Wifey was making some food, Wyatt was in the kitchen, and she was at the gate. She lunged at Wyatt, not once, but twice with angry teeth bared, not friendly way. She had already been fed that night. She had shown no anger, no growling, no aggression...

Sounds like a job for the Dog Whisperer.

Have you considered putting her on your Facebook? Dogs seem to get adopted and lost pets get found very quickly on there.

Hope she finds her way back home.

She is there.

Hey, did you get her scanned for a chip?

She was dumped on us today. To be honest, of all the rescues we've done, ONE had a chip.

Yowsa!

What's the reticence to chips down there?

That's a pretty big deal around here. Both mine are chipped, and pretty much everyone's at my dog-park are, too.

I assumed this is standard business, these days.

There are a LOT of dumped dog's down here in San Antonio.

Best of luck finding her a new home. She has soulful eyes and just needs the right set of circumstances to thrive.

Re: South Texas DP'ers, looking for a Chocolate Lab? Someone dumped one on my porch

Quick update,

She'd definitely an outdoor dog. Unspayed... I cannot afford to, nor do I have the resources for this rescue. I may have to break down and drop her with oen of the few shelters here, which in our experience are really hard to get a dog too. If anyone has a friend, or family member looking for a back yard lab, we have her.

Be very careful of that. A dog with food (or other resource) aggression can get quite violent and attack suddenly. If another dog even looks her way while she's eating, or walks too close to her feeding area....it could be anything at all. One of my dogs is like that. She likes my other dog, but she is extremely food/toy aggressive around my other dog and has attacked him numerous times over the year. She doesn't go to hurt him, necessarily....she grabs his ears and pins him to the ground...it's very violent. It's like she goes into a red zone. (She's on medication, now, and I go to extremes regarding food and treats and toys.) I've gotten hurt several times protecting the other dog and getting her to stop (she's trained to "drop it" if I can get her by the scruff of her neck). She's not food aggressive with people. Just other dogs. She's a rescue.

The lab shouldn't be around other dogs, probably.

There might be lab rescues in your area. It's a popular breed. You have to tell them she has this issue, of course, when you find someone to take her. Otherwise, a small dog or child might get seriously injured or worse.

Well, I'm from the deep south and have known a number of different kinds of people. Then I moved to the city and ran across different kinds of people there. There are a lot of people in the country who don't pamper pets like the rest of us, take them for exams, get them shots, heartworm preventive, or train them. They have a very different view of responsibilities toward pets.

Interesting.

Yeah, I live in an urban environment.

So it's yearly exams, chipping, shots, and tags. Your shots got to be up-to-date for the dog parks, so in the dog parks I probably meet the more active and conscientious owners.

No idea of rural dog owners' behaviours, but my wife was originally from The Philippines; you don't want to know how they treat their dogs there! Consequently, they don't seem to live or remain with the owners more than a couple years at best, there.

Not just rural. But I also lived near an illegal immigrant area....they have a very different view of pets. Also, they're poor and have troubles. Their dogs are the last thing on their minds. It's sad. If their dogs got out of the yard, they didn't even bother looking for them. They didn't care. Country people are a little better than that, but have a rural view of animals and a harder view of life, IMO. Dogs with collars and tags and chips and toys would be considered sissy. Except maybe for the occasional man who would have his man's best friend kind of dog. And of course, hunters might have hunting dogs.

My dad, who was raised in the country, had that view of dogs. He didn't like 'em. He now denies that, but it's true. But people change with age. Now he has a huge pig. A pig! This is his fourth! He set up a room for his pig (the sunroom), specially heated, with a large igloo and blankies, and air conditioning. They spare no expense feeding the pigs. Yes, age changes you.

As for me...my dogs are spoiled rotten, fed well (too well!), microchipped, examined every year, shots, trained (to a degree), etc. They're both rescues, which brings its own set of problems. But, well, there you go.

Hey, I knew a girl that had a small pig! And in a crowded neighborhood deep in the city. And yes, they kept it in the house. They were Mexican.

But my neighborhood was predominately Polish, and some of the Polish girls had pet rabbits! Yep. In the city. It's a Polish thing, along with pigeons. One girl I knew even had a leash for her rabbit, and it would hop down the sidewalk with her while on a thin little cat leash! Pretty cool stuff. And they really hop - those rabbits!

We're working with a few options, we learned today when trying to get her outside for a walk that she's aggressive towards our small dogs. She lunged growling at one who was just "near" her. If you look, her nose i gashed, classic three claw formation. A smaller animal slashed her, I bet she learned to distrust then. That's a guess but probably a good one.

Oh, dear. I wouldn't just wish and hope that will get better. She has an issue...and it won't be getting better without serious work over months and years.

My food/resource aggressive dog isn't aggressive with other dogs, but I never let her near other dogs, esp small ones. Only because I've seen her attack my other dog, so I know she has that in her. I've been put on notice, so to speak.

It's possible the lab was dumped because she has those issues. I feel sorry for dogs like that. They're anxious dogs, when they should be happy. But concern must be for those she could attack.

I've been working with mine for several years. She still has that issue. I'm of the opinion that it doesn't go away. It's part of who they are, how they react to the world. It can only be managed. I will work with her for some time, but if one more attack occurs, I'm looking into putting her to sleep. I can't have my other dog repeatedly attacked, and no one else would take her (no one who would treat her well, anyway).

If you can't find a home for the lab, I don't know where you can take her. If you take her to the shelter, she'll go into a kennel with other dogs....she may hurt another dog. That may be where she became aggressive, to begin with. I couldn't find a place to take my rescue, which is how I ended up keeping her. I now think she was dumped because she had this issue.
