Sara Gideon wins Maine Democratic primary to face Susan Collins

Democrat Sara Gideon (right) will oppose GOP incumbent Susan Collins on November 3rd.

7/14/20
House Speaker Sara Gideon decisively won the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate on Tuesday and will face incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November in one of the most anticipated races in state history. The Bangor Daily News and its national election results partner, Decision Desk HQ, called the race at 9:06 p.m., when unofficial results showed Gideon with 73.5 percent of votes. It was well over the 50 percent threshold necessary to avoid a ranked-choice runoff. Gideon will now formally go head-to-head with Collins in what is already the most expensive congressional race in Maine’s history. Both candidates are likely to be in the national spotlight as Maine is considered a pivotal state for Republicans looking to hold onto the Senate. Gideon, of Freeport, was considered the favorite going into Election Day, with backing from national Democrats as well as many state legislators. Her campaign has raised an unprecedented $23 million, including $9 million during the second quarter.

Collins is one of national Democrats’ top targets as the party looks to take the U.S. Senate majority back from Republicans. The fourth-term Republican, who won with two-thirds of votes in 2014, angered liberal voters with her 2018 vote to confirm U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, prompting a fundraising spree that raised more than $4 million for her eventual opponent. That money will now be transferred to Gideon.

Republican Susan Collins has shown herself to be a Donald Trump enabler. She needs to go.

It's now up to Maine voters to replace Collins and hopefully pry the US Senate from the grip of "Moscow" Mitch McConnell and the Trump Party.

I've always thought of Maine as a democratic state. I'm not sure how they got a republican senator.

I think democrats have to win 3 seats to take over the senate?

Histrionics much?

Susan Collins, Senator for Maine - GovTrack.us

Collins is solidly in the middle ideologically in her voting record.

Collins votes the Trump line 78% of the time. She's certainly no moderate.

Since I actually proved my point based on her voting record, how about you try to use something besides Orange man bad to prove your point.

Oh look, it's more lazy name-calling from TD.

TDS TDS TDS. That's all you have come up with in the time since Trump announced he was running. It's not surprising, since he is indefensible and you're you. But really... lazy, not to mention stupid and dishonest posting.

How about you try to make an actual argument for once, assuming you are capable?

Collins trails Democrat Sara Gideon by 4 in Maine Senate race

Maine state House Speaker Sara Gideon (D) holds a 4-point lead over Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) in the state’s hotly contested Senate race, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by the Democratic-leaning firm Public Policy Polling (PPP), shows Gideon, the current front-runner for the Democratic Senate nomination in Maine, garnering 46 percent of the vote to Collins’s 42 percent.

Collins, a 23-year veteran of the Senate, has repeatedly won reelection in the past, largely due to her crossover appeal to both Republicans and Democrats. But she became a top political target for Democrats in 2017 after she voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court in 2017 as he faced allegations of sexual assault.

Margin of error doesn't help Collins given the same margin applies to Gideon. A politically tired old and wrinkled incumbent senator of four terms -- that's a quarter century -- running behind at 42% and who ran away with it last time might start clearing out her desk anytime now.

While Collins wears the Trump-Collins-Republican Collar, Sara Gideon is getting Republican crossover support from those who know the traditions of Sen. Margaret Chase Smith. 24 years in the senate is a fat retirement package that eases the conscience of a lot of Mainiac voters luv 'em.

There will be many like me who have not voted for Collins who will this time because when her vote counted she got it right, Kavenaugh. She usually gets 65 or so percent. It will be closer this time. Never thought I would see as many Trump signs in front of homes and businesses in Maine. Thousands. Greater Portland decides though........I bet Trump wins one Delegate again from Maine and there is a new Republican from Maine the house.

For many of us it comes down not to the individual Senator's effectiveness or voting record or likability factor.
It comes down to defeating the Republican Party that has morphed into an ass kissing Cult of Denial support group for the worst US president since Andrew Jackson.
For a majority of Americans the Trump era has been SO offensive that we have one single goal: to defeat every member of the GOP who has remained silent as Trump has
urinated on our democracy, rotted our Justice Department, and wiped his dirty shoes on our constitution.

The Republican Party is complicit in allowing Trump to ignore Russian threats to our elections, to ignore Russian bounties on our soldiers, and use unidentified federal military
personnel to intimidate American protesters over the objections of state governors and city mayors. Trump has to go. So does the GOP stranglehold in the Senate.

It's a smear job. One of the things you excel at here.

Russian collusion is dead. The Russian bounties was never proven and the protestors are burning cities down and ramping up violence. You think people want to live in battle zones? Democrat mayors have failed to make sure the protests remain peaceful.
