With isolated cases of the dangerous new coronavirus cropping up in a number of states, public health officials say it is only a matter of time before the virus appears in New York City.

As a result, hospitals have been on the lookout for patients with recent travel involving Wuhan, the Chinese city where the coronavirus is believed to have originated. And they have urged those who recently traveled there — or who have been in contact with someone who has — to quickly seek medical care if they have any respiratory or flulike symptoms. “It’s inevitable that we will have someone who is positive with coronavirus,” New York City’s health commissioner, Dr. Oxiris Barbot, said Sunday.[paywall]

Yes, it probably is inevitable because they are still only screening people with a connection to Wuhan while ignoring the fact that Coronavirus has spread to numerous cities and provinces in China and several other countries in Asia.

I think it's only a matter of time before it starts appearing everywhere and here's the problem.

The symptoms are not very distinct and it appears that one can spread it before you exhibit symptoms and in some cases, that's if you exhibit symptoms at all, making these medical checkpoints completely ineffective and I believe we still don't know the incubation period, I've recently seen perhaps 14 days and it also means that the amount of people infected must be, will be, massively higher than official numbers.

Forget the impact on NYC's economy, if scientists have concerns about the potential for mutation, we could be talking about a global travel shut down the likes of which we have never seen in modern history, the impact on the global economy will be massive.

Now I am not one who thinks we need an Ebola style panic here, but the potential for interesting days ahead is definitely there.

The whole thing is outrageously overblown.

When this hits the West Coast and NYC homeless population it is going to spread like an out of control wildfire.

We are already discussing what our threshold of how much it has spread in the USA and how great a risk it is when we hunker down and isolate ourselves until this is over. We are very much "survivalists" in terms of living supplies and isolation from other humans and even all animals if need be. This dates back to the Avian Flu scare?

Are you doing anything? Getting masks? Stocking a little food? Buying bullets? Preparing to bug out of the city if need be? Anything?
