Small- to medium-sized dog. Good shooting.

Paws up don't shoot!

DogLivesMatter

What color was the dog?

At least he won't have to worry about bail.

What a tough guy.

I had a huge rottweiler charge at me once. Yeah I took a bite to the face but I didn't have to kill the dog to get it off me. I still love me some rotts too.

My wife read the article to me, and I believe she said it was a Belgian Malinois.

If true, these are pretty dangerous dogs when they are aggressive, not unlike German Shepherds.

By all accounts, the owner should have kept hold of their dog.

If it was a pitbull, it doesn't matter what size it was...it was a righteous shoot.

I would not say it is a matter of being tough. No one should be obligated to suffer injury, maiming or death just because some owner was irresponsible enough to let go of their aggressive dog.

Good point. I wish there was a video because so far we don't know if the dog was really aggressively out to hurt someone or barking and jumping and someone mistook them for being aggressive. Seems the reports are varying. Even the agent's story changed from no leash to leashed so we'll see.

The Secret Service’s first account of how one of its agents shot dead a dog in Brooklyn was as wrong as a fake $100 bill.

The counterfeit-busting government agency admitted Tuesday that the dog shot dead by an off-duty agent was on a leash after all.

Who knows if it was a good shoot or not -- some cops tend to shoot first and back up their stories later, but most cops will go out of their way not to shoot a dog. If they're smart that is.

I wonder if cops-in-training should be required to walk along with mail carriers for a month or so -- to see the right way to handle dogs.

The dog wore a leash, but there was no one at the other end of the leash. The owners had entrusted a third party with their dog.

Windsor Terrace, the affluent neighborhood where the incident took place, has gained a reputation for lax owners of aggressive dogs. 7 attacks by dogs, on and off leashes against humans, including three children during the past 18 months. One child required 67 stitches and subsequent plastic surgery. It isn't the dogs at fault, it is the fault of irresponsible humans. Grant the dogs clemency, put down the humans.

The Secret Service has supported its agent, and will refrain from further comment. The NYPD Animal Control Unit has issued the owners a $500 summons, and they face 30 days in prison for a first offense.

No excuse to randomly shoot and kill a dog and claim self defense. I agree with the bolded

I love dogs, Lovebug. But I would not let my love for dogs get in the way of protecting myself, my friends or a loved one if someone negligently lets an aggressive dog off their leash to attack me and mine. My wife and I own a beautiful Queensland Heeler who I walk every day around my neighborhood. And she is big for her breed, almost as tall as a Lab, and she does not like kids (except for mine). And if I were negligent enough to let her off her leash to charge someone or their kids, while I would be enraged and heartbroken if she were shot, I would not be able to blame someone for being scared.

If and when a dog charges, of course, but just because a dog is without human doesn't mean the dog is aggressive. I don't know the circumstances in this case, I wasn't there.
We are currently looking for property, often arrive before the agent and are greeted by (sadly) roaming dogs. Some of them come running toward us. It makes us feel us a bit uneasy, but we haven't felt that we had to defend ourselves or shoot any of the dogs. Ok, I carry treats, just in case.

Hmmm...looks like the agent might have lied...

An off-duty Secret Service agent fatally shot a dog being walked on a leash through a Brooklyn neighborhood Monday night, police sources and witnesses said.

The agent, whose name has not been released, was turning the corner from E. 8th St. onto Caton Place in Windsor Terrace about 9:45 p.m. when he came across a man and his girlfriend walking with a female Belgian Shepherd.

The dog started barking, and the startled agent pulled out his gun and shot her, police sources said.

“She scared a cop who was walking home,” the visibly shaken dog’s owner said as he covered his eyes. “He shot her and she’s dead.”

I'm a long time roommate of dogs. Would not be a comparable quality of life without them. Their interactions with my kids, wife and myself always made a positive difference, good times and bad.

Dogs seek to protect their packs (families) and territory. It is up to the humans to keep those traits strictly defensive. This is called responsibility. That's we have a 3 lb midget attack cat. Dog, at 120 lbs is routinely bullied into his place by her. He adores her and wouldn't have it any other way. During the almost 8 years he's been with us, I've witnessed the grandkids do unintentional horrible things to him. The worst he has responded has been to give them a face wash with his tongue, or knocked them over as tries to escape their clutches for a moment. My wife learned to never pat a baby's bottom to find out if a diaper change was in order. He'd push her away to make sure the baby was safe. The same with their mothers. That same baby could punch him the nose, poke him in the eye, pull his tail, grab his tongue, and that baby will suffer a face wash.

But when we are outside together, people who don't know he's a giant wuss, cross the street when they see us. 120 lb Dog can look intimidating. Whatever is going down, I say "here" and he is at my side. He knows he's getting a treat, a compliment and a neck rub. For him, few greater pleasures other than human food dropped on the floor.

Dogs bark when they are afraid, growl when getting ready to attack or when playing pull games. A medium to large dog barking, growling and running toward anyone can strike fear in the heart. I don't blame the officer, I do blame the irresponsible humans.

The Pitbull is not the most dangerous dog in America. The standard poodle and springer spaniel are the most frequent biters per capita. The most dangerous biters Labrador retrievers: 13.3%, Pit Bulls: 8.4%, German Shepherds: 7.8%, Rottweilers: 3.9%, Chows: 3.5%. Mixed breeds, mongrels are #6 at 2.7%.The most ferocious and best police dogs, Neapolitan Mastiffs and Boxers bred for large size. Both smart and unrelenting.

Maybe that's why they are running towards you ;-)

Even if the dog was barking and jumping out of happiness, it's a good shooting IMO. The other person is not obligated to discern what the dog might do if it's barking and jumping on him. Some people had been bitten in the past and are in no mood to figure out free roaming dogs that can jump on them. Nor is it their obligation.
