New York Legislators Call for Statewide Decriminalization of Prostitution
New York Legislators Call for Statewide Decriminalization of Prostitution Emily Shugerman Local legislators said Monday that they will introduce a bill decriminalizing sex work in New York state.... ” “Trying to stop adult sex work shouldn’t be the business of the criminal justice system,” Gottfried said at the Decrim NY launch event. “Throughout history, it hasn’t worked, and it makes things worse. Decriminalizing adult sex work is harm reduction.”

~~~~~~
Governor Cuomo and his Democrat majority in NY State are trying to justify legalizing a trade that destroys the lives of the women and young people who are victims of having their bodies being used like they are no more than a piece of trash. Makes me sick to think of this!!! Each woman or child who is in this trade has a story. There is a reason that their life has ended up in this low place. So sad and sick when you see the mentality and immorality of the things that lawmakers in New York are doing!.....As if it weren't bad enough with recent abortion laws.....now this! Disgusting!
Not only has the governor proclaimed New York State a sanctuary state. He is now trying to make the state the prostitution state and encourage HIV and other STDS.
Frankly, I have no problem with that as long as it's controlled like in Europe: prostitutes are registered, declare their income (grin), pay for their half-yearly HIV/STD testing and don't offer their "services" within certain public areas (schools, churches, shopping centers, etc.).
I support this.
It must be regulated to protect the workers, and their clients. There must be legal recourse in the event of fraud or other commercial crimes. Criminal punishments for abuse of workers or clients. Medical requirements must be set, and we already have examples of this with CDL licenses also requiring a medical certification that the operator is in good health and able to do the job.
Regular inspections to make sure the work environment is clean and safe. Basically all the normal protections any other worker would expect and any other consumer would want to ensure a fair and safe transaction.
Well, I agree with you Doc91478. I think the legalization of prostitution is dangerous because it increases human trafficking, and further encourages men to see women's bodies and their affections as commodities that they are entitled to purchase. That is why I believe that every state in the Union should follow the Swedish model of prostitution laws, and decriminalize the selling of sex (thus freeing the victims of the sex trade to report abuse), while simultaneously criminalizing the purchase of sex (i.e., punishing the victimizers and beneficiaries of the sex trade). As a result, the rate of prostitution has greatly fallen in Sweden, which is a net benefit to society as a whole.
I agree that legalizing prostitution will increase human trafficking. But only if we don’t put resources into countering it. Personally I find harassing people driving and on the streets for minor “offenses” to be quite annoying and plenty of those resources could be shifted.
Hmm... how about age or gender discrimination protection? Could you refuse "service" or hiring based on the worker's age or gender?
As a result, the rate of prostitution has greatly fallen in Sweden, which is a net benefit to society as a whole.
The MEASURED rate of prostitution.
I've NEVER purchased the services of a prostitute.
Came close a few times back in my younger and more hormonal days but never followed through.
So I don't have a dog in this fight, not even the horn dog between my legs, although being a typical male, I suspect that years ago, it would have acquiesced and performed as advertised had I taken the plunge.
But that doesn't mean I never knew any pros. I was a coke fiend for many years and guess what?
Yeah you guessed it, a lot of pros are druggies. That also doesn't mean I didn't "hook up".
Yeah, I did a few times, but I didn't lay cash on the bed...hookup was offered and I took them up on it.
No, that doesn't make me any kind of expert, but knowing what I know now about prostitutes, I know this:
It will never end, no law will ever eliminate prostitution and when you measure the rate of prostitution in an environment with strong penalties and strict enforcement, your measuring stick will not be even remotely accurate. Even the most draconian Muslim countries have a prostitution business, A THRIVING prostitution business. Prostitutes can even be found in Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Brunei, Iran and Iraq.
Even North Korea has a prostitution business.
I doubt I can support legalizing it as a commercial trade with a smile on my face.
If that happened, it's not like I'd be saying "Hmmm, maybe time to dip the wick and try it out".
But the term "harm reduction" actually makes a lot of sense to me, because it reminds me of clean needle services for junkies. I don't support intravenous drug use but since I realize that it's going to happen, I'd rather not see syringes all over the streets and I'd rather not see epidemic vectors skyrocket due to needle sharing or other unsanitary practices.
Clean needle services don't necessarily stop idiot junkies from dropping their used syringes in the streets but in some places, the penalties have increased because the reasoning is that since clean needles are available the least the junkie can do is try to be at least somewhat responsible and drop the used ones in the provided disposal boxes where they pick up their fresh ones.
Despite the fact that many cities show evidence of used syringes on their streets the fact is, about 55-65% of junkies DO return their used needles for disposal so we're stuck with the other 35 percent who would drop their trash anyway, clean needles or not.
So...harm reduction. Rather than attempt to legislate morality, I'd rather see harm reduction and a lot of strict regulation.
Hmm... how about age or gender discrimination protection? Could you refuse "service" or hiring based on the worker's age or gender?
And for that matter, can the prostitute refuse to consent to servicing certain clientele? What if the prostitute, for whatever reason, does not like servicing customers of certain races or religious groups? Can the customers then sue her for either specific performance in violation of her consent or have her stripped of her prostitution license?
Frankly, I have no problem with that as long as it's controlled like in Europe: prostitutes are registered, declare their income (grin), pay for their half-yearly HIV/STD testing and don't offer their "services" within certain public areas (schools, churches, shopping centers, etc.).
Legal Prostitution Systems in Europe
Legal Prostitution Systems in Europe | SpringerLink
Jul 15, 2017 · Abstract. This chapter examines selected European prostitution and trafficking policies and law enforcement practices. I first present two analytical approaches relevant to European policy regimes, and conclude that they are severely flawed either because of problematic assumptions or because the data are insufficient to support the conclusions drawn by the analysts.
The Wolfenden Report. The Wolfenden Report was published in 1957. It concluded that the criminalisation of homosexuality was an impingement on civil liberty. While the law should prevent abuse and protect the young and other vulnerable individuals, it should not intrude into matters of personal morality.
I tried to word that discrimination issue to be both ways. It would seem to be illegal for a prostitute to refuse to service a paying customer based on their physical appearance, race, age or gender. It is also unlikely that a prostitute applicant would be hired if they are old, overweight or otherwise deemed to be physically unattractive/fit. It seems that the military can get away with hiring only those between 18 and 34 and in decent shape, but they are a rare exception.
Have you ever considered the health and other statistics from Nevada where prostitution is legal as a county option? Probably not.
The girls are examined for various diseases and treated if necessary. It works very well in those counties exercising the option.
Congratulations to the NY legislators. Maybe sanity is stirring in Albany?
Human trafficking is quite obviously a side-effect of the criminal underground. How in the heck do people figure that bringing the business out into the open would actually increase human trafficking rather than decrease it? That makes no sense to me.
Many girls who work for pimps would love to go out "on their own" and form their own business, but they can't because the pimp will hunt them down and make sure (one way or another) that she's not usurping his monopoly.
I have zero issues with this if done properly and nothing of your opinion you added is honest. Its laughable hyperbole and nothing more.
Regulate it (like all business - track of sells/money, quality of service/products, safety and legality etc) and tax it.
Take some of that money for extra enforcement of the industry and its needs (health, abuse, illegal workers etc)
ive never seen the logic of making sex for money illegal alone. i can do all sorts of labor for my neighbor in her home and see can pay me and thats fine, i could even do it naked if i want but if she touches my penis thats illegal some how.... yeah its silly and illogical. Reminds me of gun laws some people want . .totally illogical and doesnt fix anything.
Then all work safety laws also should be abolished since prostitution likely is THE most dangerous of professions. THen follow the standard that employees can contract for extremely dangerous tasks currently illegal for the employer to hire people to do. For example, safety harnesses and lines for roof and high rise work slows employees down.
All protective laws should be eliminated if the doctrine is that employers and employees can enter into any labor contract.
Since the Democratic Party fully supports gang rape of migrant females on the way to the USA, it is predictable they would support raping migrant females for those who live thru it and get into the USA. Just toss her $5, boasting she is saving people money exactly like illegal immigrants save people money as cheap farm workers.
To the Democratic Party, that is who illegal immigrants are - their economic slaves, since Democrats can no longer directly own slaves.
As long as prostitution is kept illegal, organized criminals, pimps and madams, can take advantage of working ladies of the night, morning and afternoon. Forcing many through subterfuge of false promises made overseas into a sex trade they never expected in their naiveté of hope for a better life. Drug abuse, stds will remain as problems with nothing but despair for those caught in an endless cycle.
Bring the oldest profession into the light, and society can better limit the abuse of underage girls, better limit false immigration and slavery, better limit stds including the spread of HIV, and so forth. Your sense of what is moral and what isn't is severely indicative of self righteousness without honesty. Nothing will make prostitution disappear from reality. No religious persecution, no indictments and jail terms, no public shaming, nothing. Better to place it in a controlled environment, free of abusive pimps and organized crime, the slave trade, and substance abuse. The cheap votes garnered by California and other DA's who shut down Craig's List and Backpage made it tougher for police to identify underage runaway teens, the pimps who turned them to the life, and people like you contribute to the hypocrisy.
Obviously, you didn't peruse post #9. regarding Prostitution in Europe and the Wolfenden Report of 1957. I have seen the some of the results by living in Europe, primarily in the UK and Germany. No matter the gov't control of the oldest profession on earth, there will always be criminal intervention to make money. No matter if it takes place in Nevada, Bayswater Rd or Kings Crossing UK, the Breite Strasse Hamburg, the Red Light District in Amsterdam or Place Pigalle in Paris it's still reeks of criminal control. I'm all for licensing and medical examination of these workers, but there will always be pimps to rule them. Even where there's gov't control of prostitution you'll always find the criminals and high drug use of the sex workers.
Nothing is obvious. We are not Europe. We can learn from their errors and avoid them. We can use drug screening tests to eliminate drug abusers, and spare those who enjoy poppy seed rolls and bagels. We can lock out the organized criminals who prey on these women and their customers. We can go after police paid to look the other way. This is the United States where "can do" is the motto. Responding with fear accomplishes nothing. For the women who choose the life, there are computer software schedulers, tax programs, answering services, that all can replace the pimps and madams. These women and men who sell their bodies are more savvy than you think. Those who choose the profession are in it for the money, their money, not some pimp's well being and lies.
Sounds like the mantra of the Marxists Socialists. You know the Marxist Communism has never worked before. Even their latest failure in Venezuela proves it but they want to try it again claiming it will work only if they try it one more time. The same goes for legalization of Prostitution.
The Wolfenden Report the Buggery Laws of Great Britain decriminalized homosexuality and supposedly took prostitutes off the street allowing them to work indoors. Oops, that didn't work either.
You have no idea of what you are talking about. It takes talent to be a great prostitute and there a lot more to it that just sex.
Actually it won't increase human trafficking. Human trafficking occurs when intermediaries are allowed to get between the service provider and the client.
Your sexual repression is your own. Your christian intolerance, your own. The hypocrisy of religiosity refusing god's gifts to humanity is always underwhelming.
