A New York City man suspected of carrying out a vicious attack on a homeless woman riding a subway train has been arrested after video of the incident drew outrage.

Marc Gomez, 36, faces assault and harassment charges, according to reports.

Authorities say Gomez repeatedly punched and kicked a 78-year-old woman sitting alone on a train in the early morning hours of March 10 in the Bronx. The woman can be seen in the video holding her arm up to block punches and kicks directed at her.

Gomez reportedly left the subway car while passengers continued to film

(I looked for a better source, but for some strange reason I only found one national outlet that was reporting the arrest)

Video recording this for viral stardom, instead of helping is almost as disgusting as the crime itself. This POS will get his in jail, no worries there, but what the hell is wrong with people these days. They would rather make sure they 'get it recorded' rather than helping.

This is nothing really new if you remember the infamous raping and brutal killing of Kitty Genovese in NYC in 1964 that lasted for over 30 minutes in front of numerous witnesses.

I have always told my sons if you get mugged in public you are basically on your own and don't expect anyone to help you. You must fight back to kill your attacker as nobody is likely to help you.

That is blunt but it is the truth.

1. You are being too optimistic. Nothing happens to such individuals nowadays. Only a slap on the wrist: "Now be a good boy, OK?"

2. What's wrong with people nowadays is that they know they can get away with violence because activists will scream "Don't hurt that sweet, misunderstood young man! He is only a victim of society."

Good advice.

What they did, or didn't do (with the Genovese tragedy) was bad. The difference, besides the public location, is that those people hid themselves, they didn't stand 2 feet from what was happening with their cell phones recording it.

Older people remember Bernard Getz who shot 4 thugs who had harassed him on a New York subway in 1984 (when crime in that city was out of sight).

A jury acquitted him, but he was given jail time for an unlicensed firearm.

Mr. Getz was considered a hero by many New Yorkers -- and others.

The Kitty Genovese story was a myth created by the NY Times. People did call the police, and local men did go outside to try to help her but couldn't find her in the dark alley way where she died. She was attacked by a man whose sexual advances she had earlier spurned in a bar. Kitty was a lesbian, and she wasn't raped. Being viciously stabbed to death was enough of a crime. Her murderer was caught, tried and convicted, died in prison. That alley is now well lit at night. The murder took place across the street from where Rodney Dangerfield grew up, his building, the Mowbry, is a beautiful prewar building with high ceilings, large spacious rooms and lovely accouterments. Well kept and fully rented. The neighborhood, Kew Gardens, where I live is one of the safest in NYC with a well diverse population. I feel safe walking the dog 3am in the morning. There are many out and active doing the same and other things. Rarely hear of a mugging or any other attacks against people here. The alleyway where she died is behind a building with stores, two restaurants, and apartments on the second floor, adjacent to a LIRR station. A sad story made into media grist by the Times. In reality, the episode lasted less than 15 minutes from the first scream until police arrived and found her body. A terrible way to die, no matter her choice of lifestyle.

My best friend's mother, lived diagonally across the street where she also practiced law as well as raised her family in a house, her husband had died young from heart disease. She was among the first to call police, within a minute or two of hearing the poor woman's screams. She did fight back, was overwhelmed. A 70 something woman may not have been able to fight back against a physically fit 30 something man. A horrid crime, and he claimed she deserved it. Sick to say the least. He won't be met with kindness in prison. Even criminals have mothers.

Well now there seems more to the story. The fiancé of the "attacker" claims the video did not show the whole incident. The old woman had threatened her and her daughter, attacking the attacker with a knife. If true, an over reaction self defense. And a lunatic living on the streets, regardless of her age. Another case of a failed mental health system in NYC. Sometimes no mental health system can deal with all the lunatics. As any large city in the US, even tho NYC is relatively safe today, we do have our share of lunatics on the streets. If true, I'd have kicked the crap out of her also, or at least beat her with my cane. :)

I stand corrected then about the Kitty story. But if I was attacked I sure as hell wouldn't wait for a posse to show up to my rescue.

Never suggested you should do so. Kitty was a sad story, and she did fight back, not well enough.

I've been in situations, never held back, always assumed the worst and gave it back in spades. The best defense is a good offense, when you've first run like the banshees are after you, if possible. Sun Tzu suggested run from the enemy, until he is exhausted, then lie in wait and attack. Not bad advice. I'm too old to run, carry a big stick and a nice compact Beretta APX. :)

"At least two neighbours claim to have rung the cops, although police logs have no record of those calls. "

Kitty Genovese murder: The real story of the woman killed 'in front of 38 witnesses' in Queens in 1964 | The Independent

So, no evidence of the calls, just people claiming they called.

" Only a handful of people probably saw Winston Moseley attack Kitty, and one yelled, "Let that girl alone." . . . Another neighbour, Sophia Farrar, ran to help Kitty and held her as she died. "

So one person, a woman. Not "two men".

Pretty sad when the supposed "correction" of the legend is itself wrong. I'm not bothering with the rest is that it's usually just fable and embellishment.

So what? You really think the NYPD at the time, in one of the quietist precincts in the city, wasn't covering its ass? Were you there? Did you know or do you know the neighborhood, the location intimately? There were no 38 witnesses, a fabrication by the NYT, nothing more. Late night in a sleepy neighborhood, few out on the streets if any. The Mowbry, across the street only had 22 apartments facing the LIRR, and the alleyway behind the building where the ugly deed occurred. The same two story building Rodney Dangerfield's family lived in before moving into the Mowbry. No one looking out their windows after hearing Kitty's screams could see through that building to the alley where she was brutally murdered.

Do you really think you will embarrass me by repeating the same lurid BS from the media who made one of many horrid murder grist to sell their advertising? Grow up and get a life of your own. Trolling me won't substitute for the life you haven't lived. I'd do the same to you, but why bother? I already know you are miserable and I have and continue to enjoy life.
