(CNN) A US Marine was shot and killed while on duty at the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC, early Tuesday morning, the Marine Corps said in a news release.

The fatal injury was not self-inflicted, Marine Gunnery Sgt. John Jackson said.

The shooting occurred on the grounds of the Marine Barracks.

I'm sure there is a lot more to this story to come.

I found this local update but it's not much.

Marines get a lot of firearms training so I'm a bit surprised that this is being called an accident. Will be interesting to find out more but the Marines have a tendency to bottle up things that make them look bad.

That is awful to hear. But it is astonishing rare this happens on a base.

I just remember in boot camp the first time we were given M-16s with live ammo at the shooting range. And have always thought what the responsibility level was for those sergeants running it. There were guys out there who had never fired a weapon. I have to commend those men who ran that range.

I’m sure that your service was after mine,(yes we had M-16s as well). The first time we went to the range and were issued live rounds, the Drill Sergeant made a point of point to a slung M-16 hanging in the range officers tower and explaining why it was there. Any rifle not pointing down range was to be dealt with........
