(Reuters) - A man died on Saturday in what local police called a possible shark attack at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, a town on Cape Cod that draws crowds of tourists.

The victim, who was identified only as a man in his 20s, died from injuries at Cape Cod Hospital after rescuers pulled him from the water and performed emergency first aid including CPR, the Wellfleet Police Department said in a statement.

Reminds me of the first time I saw Jaws. I grew up near the NE Atlantic coast & spent a lot of time at the beaches but that flick scared the s**t of of me. I always had that fear of what might be just inches from feet or ankles in the unseen, dark waters.

Big hurt on the local merchants, unfortunately Too bad Quint has passed. See Robert Shaw as Jaws' Quint: 8 Facts | Legacy.com

Deadly 'shark attack' at Massachusetts beach

Officials say the town's beaches will remain closed to swimmers for at least 24 hours.

A witness described the scene on the beach as a "nightmare" to the Cape Cod Times newspaper.

"Just a giant eruption of water. 15ft wide. I saw a tail and a lot of thrashing," Joe Booth said.

"You could tell by the body language of the guys in the water something wasn't right."

I hope Chief Brody is on this case. 'You're going to need a bigger boat' scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2I91DJZKRxs

Awful. Poor lad. Shark attacks are random events and for the most part an unlikely danger for humans entering the water.

Statistically, Australians have a higher chance of being attacked by a shark than any other Country in the world. We have some of the most beautiful surf beaches in the world and to many Aussies, going for a Surf in the morning is as natural as eating dinner.

There is always a small level of risk involved, just like with anything we do in life really.
