NYC Subways so bad that $836 million extra is considered a bandaid

Perhaps the real solution is privatization

No on principle...this is too important to the functioning of NYC to remove from direct citizen oversight.

This has to stay public.

City buses...all over America people are not riding city buses like they used to and no one so far as I know has figured out why...... been going on for several years now, at first this change got ignored but now some of us want to know what is going on....this is likely a big deal what ever it is.

Go ride the bus in a few cities and find out. When I was a teenager I rode the bus a lot. I walked down to the corner where there usually was a bus stop and hopped on the next bus to come along. I would ride it until it came to my cross street where I got off and waited for that bus to take me down that street. Simple.

Today you go to the corner and the bus stop is 1/4 to 1/2 mile down the street. When you get on they can't make change. Then you find out it is not going down that street but too the mall. You get off and wait another half hour. Then finally a bus shows up going down your street but it doesn't go as far as you want to go. So you have to get off walk another 1/2 mile cross under the freeway and wait for anther bus. 45 minutes later it shows up and finally it takes you down to the cross street. There you sit for anther 1/2 hour watching buses go buy going to the airport or the casino until finally your bus arrives. You get on that bus and it doesn't go all the way to your next turn. By now half the day is shot and you sit there for an hour only to find out that the next bus on this street is at 3:30. Now your wondering if you will be able to get home even if you start right now. You still have never even got to where you are going.

In Houston I lived off Bissonet street in west side of the city and worked at a plumbing company 1 block off the same street. It was approximately 12 mile from my house to work. Riding the bus it took from 2-1/2 hours to over 3 hours to get to work. Getting back home was even worse if even possible.

I have used the Beijing subway system, and bus transit system in that city

Both are amazing. The subway is fast clean, air conditioned and stops within 2 inches of where it is required to (safety barriers to prevent people from getting to the tracks make that a requirement). Not a huge number of stations, but well done covering much of the city. The buses are used to get you to the final location. The subway will get you across Beijing much faster than any vehicle will. Now back in 2014 you would only want to stay out of the washrooms in the subway stations

This

Bus ridership has gone down because of the time it takes to go anywhere. The wait for any connections makes taking a bus compared to driving turns a 30 minute commute to 2 hours+

Riding the bus has always been time consuming and while lack of frequency and not reliably sticking to the schedule are huge turn offs bus use seems to be down even where schedules were not cut and where the transit agencies do a decent job of running the service.

Seems to be...I am not convinced that the problem is not cuts made after the Great Recession when ridership was down....agencies tend to think "Well, cutting bus service by 10% is not a huge deal" but when it comes to actually using the bus service it can be....it can be a making of the trip longer and making the time waste because we need to go early to make it quite painful to the quality of our lives.

Maybe we instead do Uber.

I think we need to completely rethink our mass transit. The trend is more towards park and ride. I think more work from home. More meetings done by computer. I think we need a whole new mass transit connecting cities. A quick drive across town is still nicer in your own car. But 5+ hours between cities is where we need new mass transit. This will need to be federal money. Each city will have to work on there individual problems. Each city presents its own unique challenges.

So sad, Andy is no longer part of the Kennedy clan, he's lost that charm and can't hide the corruption.

Nah, I still won't waste time reading the NY Post. The Page Six gossip isn't that enticing.

Federal funds, state funds, city funds, it is the people's money not Andy boy's. Put that in your pistol pocket and whistle Dixie.

Since the NY Post is the only paper running this story, I thought you might find it useful. The work on the Midtown Tunnel was long planned.

Work on your searching abilities. The NY Times addressed Andy's games before the retiling began. That leaves only the NY Daily News which is written for those with 4th grade education. Too complex an issue for the News.

The planning for the work on both tunnels commenced in 1982 under the City's then Chief Traffic Engineer Sam Schwartz. The same guy who oversaw the renovation of the Brooklyn Bridge. You got that? Both Tunnels.

Please supply a link to the NY Times addressing a 30 million dollar expenditure of colored tiles. Or do you remember reading it in 1982? Yes, I agree, there was work planned for two tunnels, the Brooklyn-Battery and the Queens-Midtown. Both have a stripe of colored tiles.

If this is Cuomo's biggest problem, He should run for president.

NOTE: A transit guy such as me has to I think be thrilled to see a transit thread get anywhere nears 100 posts.

Couldn't you say the same about grocery stores and houses? Why aren't they nationalized?

I'm not digging through months of Buffalo Billion corruption articles and opinion pieces to satisfy your desires. Not worth my time. Good to know Billions or $$$'s of corruption and vanity spending qualifies a presidential candidate.

Hilary Clinton - "I promise 200k new jobs for upstate and western NY if you elect me as senator."

Mario Cuomo - "I will spend whatever it takes, billions if necessary, to create 200k new jobs for upstate and western NY."

Do you usually conflate your errors of when proposals were first laid on the table with today's breakfast? The Second Avenue Subway was first proposed during 1929. Wheaties or Cornflakes?

In other words you have nothing concrete (lol) to back your poor opinions of Democrats who have held office in New York. Good to know....snap crackle and pop!

Completely out of line. I have poor opinions of every politician who has held office in NYC and State with one exception, Eric A. Ulrich, City Councilman. He's repeatedly been out there for his constituents whatever the need. He's a young family man with honest morality. A rarity, regardless of party affiliations. I'll add two others, Mayors Jimmy Walker and Fiorello LaGuardia. Jimmy was always honest about his corruption and the people of the city loved him. As corrupt as Tamany Hall was, it left the city a legacy of gorgeous public architecture and quality public works. The little flower wasn't perfect, but again loved. You assume, but you know nothing.

Now you can go kiss silk stocking Sheldon's fat derriere as he attempts to worm out of his prison sentence. He still believes he did nothing wrong, after two failed defenses. NYC has been a Democrat dominated political environment since the party was formed. That translates as more Democrats in office to call out. Doesn't mean republicans were any less corrupt or light weight.

Regardless, your boy Cuomo wasted his potential, had been in office to long, sees himself as an aristocrat, and has forgotten he is here to serve the people, the people are not here to serve him. Enjoy those krispie treats, may the sugar work their way into your cavities. All the sugar is bad for your thinking processes. Clouds the mind. No doubt you have Matty Troy and cohorts rolling over in their graves laughing.

You have an entertaining way of protesting disagreement with your opinions. Please add a glass of wine to the menu. ;) Just FYI, I have never eaten a krispie treat, and denied them to my children also. Dental health is a great concern of mine, as is clear thinking.

I think New York has been well served by several democrats. Patrick Moynihan for one, and the great Mario Cuomo. Now I admit, Andrew is no Mario. Hillary was a very effective Senator, whether you personally liked her or not does not change that. New York is a great place to live, a recognized cosmopolitan center with beautiful environments of ocean, mountain, river and lake. Rural, urban, suburban...we have it all. New York has been served for many many years by democratic majorities. But you are not a New Yorker if you can't find something to gripe about. So please do, carry on about the apparent waste of having a stripe of color in the tunnels.

This thread is a great romp as I sit here eating my Kroger Chicken Nuggets (Quintessential Mystery Meat), blue cheese dressing topped with loads of tobacco.

Thank You to those who done it.

I don't care.

What exactly did Moynihan do for NY other than give nice speeches? How many bill did he introduce or get passed for the benefit of NY.

Mario was another quality orator, who did well at touting himself.

Hilary was a lying carpetbagger filled with false promises who did absolutely nothing.

You still don't get it. The stripe wasn't on the original tiles for decoration, it was a planned safety tool. Andy's are all white. Now we can talk about those vanity tunnel dividers in blue ordered by Andy to match the state color blue. A violation of Federal safety law, since they must be orange or bright yellow. Andy's response, talk to the MTA, their purview, and they weren't dividers, they were channel steerers. Like he was stirring a cocktail.

Once again, another failure. Caricatures mean nothing.

I think I'll leave it here at your incomprehensible babble, hopefully due to a really wonderful cocktail.

Yeah, it all flies right over your head. Truth hurts. Mario's wife Matilda did more for people than Mario.

Unfortunately, dead sober while delving through your empty rhetoric.
