A national guardsman remains missing after he disappeared while trying to rescue people from flash floods that devastated a historic Maryland city Sunday, authorities said. Eddison Hermond, an active-duty member of the National Guard, was last seen around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, assisting rescue efforts after Ellicott City outside Baltimore was struck by torrents of rain, the Howard County Police Department said. "He has not been located despite ongoing searches of the area," the police department said in a statement at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Bonnie Hoppa, an acquaintance to Hermond, said he was "swept away" when chaotic storm waters cascaded down the city's Main Street. Hermond, 39, appears to be the only person unaccounted for. Authorities declared a state of emergency for Ellicott City Monday afternoon.

I watched the ravaging floodwaters coursing through downtown Ellicott City on the news. I don't think this is going to end well.

We have visited Ellicott City many times in the past. It's a shame that they just recovered from a terrible flood that happened two years and now suffer the same fate. The news I watched said the area had about 9 to 10 inches of rain over a short period of time.

Mr. Hermond was trying to help people in desperate need and it seems he may have lost his life while helping others. I hope they find him alive but the chances are small that will happen.
