The Democrat-controlled state Senate approved the measure, S55, in a 17-13 vote, according to the online legislative record. The bill passed the state House of Representatives this week.

The measure now goes to Republican Governor Phil Scott, who has shifted his stance and voiced support for some gun controls after the arrest in February of a Vermont teenager accused of threatening to shoot up a high school. The incident came two days after a former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14.

The Vermont bill raises the age for gun purchases to 21 and expands background checks for private gun sales. It also bans magazines of more than 10 rounds for long guns and 15 rounds for pistols as well as rapid-fire devices known as bump stocks.

Wow, that is a good start. Just 49 more states to go.

I disagree, period.
Banning magazine capacity IMO is just BS, be it for long guns, or for side arms.
Will Vermont also ban clips with a capacity greater than 15 for LE?

Hmmm..

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Senate passed a historic gun reform bill Friday which includes raising the gun purchasing age to 21 and expanded background checks. After nearly two hours of emotional debate on senate floor, it voted 17-13 in favor of the bill.

The house passed its version earlier this week which included restrictions on high-capacity magazines, ten rounds for longs guns and 15 rounds for handguns. It also bans bump stocks in Vermont.

Controversy surrounding the magazine cap portion of the bill continued right up until the final vote. Limiting rounds will only apply to new purchases, but opponents say a cap will not improve public or school safety and would be difficult to enforce.
"It doesn't help one bit because people who are going to shoot people are criminals, it only effects law abiding citizens,” said Sen. John Rodgers, (D) Essex-Orleans.

"Our efforts would have been much better directed at identifying threats, enhancing security in our schools, improving our mental health system and enforcing what is already on the books," added Sen. Randy Brock, (R) Franklin District.

Again, emotionally motivated efforts to deprive adult citizens (i.e. 18 - 20 year-olds) of their rights to purchase firearms, coupled with reducing magazines and harsher background checks for all adults.

How this is supposed to stop any kind of crime, much less mass shootings escapes my understanding.

Only "law-abiding" citizens will even try to obey, although I bet many will order and cache whatever is forbidden for a future "rainy day" threat scenario...making them law-breaking citizens from that point forward (if caught).

Certainly won't stop anyone from mass shootings, nor criminals from obtaining weapons and committing crimes.

These and other efforts are just more incremental "infringements" on the right to keep and bear arms. When they prove ineffective at stopping crime and mass shootings?

Even more "incremental" demands for infringement will inevitably follow.

Two things to say.

How did Adam Lanza get the guns he used.

VA Tech shooter; pistols, 10-15 round mags, 32 dead.

Useless legislation. Uh-oh, that was three things...

That's good. May we can get a trend going to coral some of the idiocy.

Translation "IF JET is not trusted to own a magazine that holds more than ten rounds by the scumbag politicians of California, JET DOESN'T WANT anyone else to be able to own such a magazine"

How are they going to expand background checks?

Get random people to do background checks for no reason other than to make people that hate guns feel warm and fuzzy because they "expanded background checks". The reward for doing a random background check for no reason will be a puppy and a card that says, "Dun rele gude".

JacksinPA:

You write,"nutty VT". It has been my life-long experience that most Vermonters are eminently sensible folk with deep and compassionate wisdom if not always sterling educations. That applies to all Vermonters, even the flat-lander imports with their New York, New Hampshire and Connecticut ideas. It is no surprise that Vermonters are willing to take reasonable but not extreme steps to protect their kids from potential harm through sensible gun regulation even despite the ancient attachment and the real need for firearms in rural Vermont. Thus, it speaks volumes to their collective wisdom that they won't allow partisan bickering and abstract ideological polarisation to paralyse pragmatic compromise for reasonable legislation in order to protect the public interest. The Green Mountain State wants to stay green and not be spattered in red.

Cheers.

that isn't sanity. Gun control won't have any effect on violence.

Well, to be more specific: how are they going to expand background checks without violating the 4th Amendment?

The problem is the majority of shootings are done with illegal weapons by criminals. These shootings are not glorified by the media but account for the majority of offenses. In fact, gun crime statistics show young gang members like handguns the most. How does the bill address criminal use of guns? If the bill does not address illegal weapons and criminal use of guns, the savings is minimized.

According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, 467,321 persons were victims of a crime committed with a firearm in 2011.[1] In the same year, data collected by the FBI show that firearms were used in 68 percent of murders, 41 percent of robbery offenses and 21 percent of aggravated assaults nationwide.[2] Most homicides in the United States are committed with firearms, especially handguns.

This above quote is from the Justice Department. How does the new law lower the criminal use of firearms? Also, why does it ban weapons that are not the main source of gun violence preferred by criminals?

The analogy is we are trying to fight obesity. The Democrat brain trust, in charge of this, makes laws that restrict eating for thin people, but it ignores the overweight people, even though we all know this is the main source of the obesity problem. Why would the Democrats do the opposite of common sense? Are they trying to drive a wedge between people, and not solve the problem? Why do the Democrats appear to favor the criminals? Do they have more in common with criminals? Or is the leadership out of their skill range?

The way the new law works is, if honest people, are willing to become criminals, they can still get any gun they want. This law may be a Democrat recruiting tactic; to the dark side, where Democrats feel more at ease.

Another way to look at this is connected to Democrat party racism. A high percentage of criminal gun violence occurs among people of color. Assault riffles and school shooting is more of a white crime. The Democrats appear to care about white victims, but not victims of color. Do the math. There is a saying, we tell a tree by the fruit is bears. This tree bears little white fruit.

Vermont has one of the lowest murder rates in the entire country.
