New headache for Pennsylvania GOP: Rep. Ryan Costello mulls retirement

Rep. Ryan Costello (R/PA)

March 15, 2018

After a stunning special election defeat in the state’s southwest, Pennsylvania Republicans face another headache: U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello’s potential retirement. Costello, of Chester County, has warned GOP leaders that he may not run for another term in the U.S. House, according to four sources familiar with the conversations, leaving party officials worried about fielding a candidate in a highly-competitive district that could flip to Democrats. The concerns about Costello’s future have swirled for weeks, dating back to when the Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew the state’s congressional map and made his district, the Sixth, more favorable to Democrats. If he joins other Republicans in retiring, Democrats would likely become the favorites to pick up his seat. The race is already seen as a top-tier contest, even with Costello involved, and Democrat Chrissy Houlahan is one of her party’s top recruits.

Costello, the sources said, may still run. But he is less than a week away from a March 20 deadline to file petitions to get on the primary ballot and has not made a definitive statement about his plans. If Costello were to decide not to run now, the GOP would have little time to find a replacement candidate. Republican leaders sounded out at least one alternative candidate in case Costello quits, but that person turned them down, two Republican sources said. They, like others interviewed for this story, requested anonymity to discuss private conversations. Republicans are already facing stiff headwinds heading into the fall midterm elections, with Democrats targeting several districts in the Philadelphia area. Reps. Pat Meehan, of Delaware County, Frank LoBiondo, of South Jersey, and Charlie Dent, of Allentown, are all retiring, opening opportunities for Democrats.

Now that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court has redrawn the GOP rigged gerrymandered districts, the Republican calculus in Pennsylvania has certainly changed.

This is a real danger across the nation, for the GOP.

It's much harder to defend an open seat, than an incumbent one. Ask Rick Saccone!

Who is he????? ;)

On one hand I hope you get your house impeachment numbers before the 2020 election, but on the other I don’t want open borders again and a Obamanomics economy.

Polling does not support impeachment so you should go for it heart and (Democrat) soul.

Open borders "again"?? When did we have open borders recently?

The Obamanomics that saw record breaking stock market levels, added over 11 million jobs, and had an unemployment drop from over 10% when he took office to under 5% when he left office?

So goes the party line. The wealthy participated, the middle class did with 401’s the rest were left out.

And in New England, “open borders” means Canadians, where I live it means South American cartels. It’s a matter of perspective.

Back to the tread, ahem, if you dems keep putting up mainstream moderate candidates, I would consider voting for them. But you don’t have that many candidates like that on your bench.

I'm middle class and have 401Ks. Sorry you didn't benefit when unemployment in this country dropped to half, foreclosures went way down (and house values improved by 20%), and the market went way up. It was a good time for most people.

I'm not a Democrat, but something tells me you already knew that.

I said the middle class had 401’s.

It’s hard to argue that the obama economy was a good economy. However, most people under 40 have no recollection of what good economy feels like. It’s a good thing.

The Northeast Republicans you directly called Democrats as an insult are indeed on the rise again,
much to the chagrin of local Democrats.

These common-sense GOPs will take back the current bastardized version of the trumpcon gop ...

Yes, and I said I'm middle class and have 401Ks. Now that we established that, what about it?

It's easy to argue the "Obama" economy was a good economy, if you remember what happened in 2007-2009, which most adults with IQs over 15 do.

It is hard to keep up with events in the US from Russia. Excuse him.

Sent from a memo written by Nunes and edited by Trump.
