A lunchtime staple of students for years, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich could be considered one of the more popular items found in the sack lunches of school children.

But in conjunction with recent equity training in local Portland schools, one principal is raising questions about the mention of the sandwich, arguing it has broader implications about race, the Portland Tribune reports.

The sandwich was reportedly mentioned in a lesson plan last year. Verenice Gutierrez from the Harvey Scott K-8 School used it as an example of a subtle form of racism in language, according to the report.
“What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?” Gutierrez said, according to the Tribune. “Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

As part of a training program known as “Courageous Conversations” that has been phased into Portland schools in recent years, the Tribune reports that staff members at Gutierrez’s school have been going through trainings, classroom observations and exercises, such as reading a news article and then talking about it from the perspective of “white privilege.”

Maybe it's more racist to assume other cultures don't enjoy peanut butter and jelly sandwiches? Yes, we do eat tortas but we also love PB&J (or PB&B peanut butter and butter).

....so it's not peanut butter jelly time?

You have to understand that the purpose of an exercise such as this is to insure that the kids are properly indoctrinated to the concept of Critical Race Theory. It's imperative that our children learn that absolutely everything has a bias toward white privilege. There is nothing in this world that doesn't in some way, shape or form victimize children of color.

Someone forgot to take their meds today. PBJ has nothing to do with "white privledge", and to even imply that is just strange. Like out of all the things you could point out--this is what you choose? PBJ is not a "white" thing to begin with. Schools can be strange sometimes.

Right? I would say it's more an American thing than just a white thing.

FFS I live in New Mexico, I have friends in Mexico, I have ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with them. It is stereotyping to assume that other races do not eat them.

*sigh*

If I lived in NM I'd never touch a sandwich again.

The food was just fantastic there....Little Anita's in Albuquerque for the win!

Ah. So you used your white power to commit cultural violence against Hispanic victims, forcing them to conform to your your white-hetero-normative culinary patriarchy. You bastard.

"peanut butter jelly with a baseball bat" is racist because Latinos play soccer.

That's all well and good, just don't drink milk with your PB&J

you understand that if you eat any african spices you are re-affirming your colonial supremacy and thus white privilege over them...

I think we appropriated peanut butter from the Canadians......;)

Heck I thought this was going to be about how schools are banning peanuts and peanut butter from schools due to allergies. Not something stupid like discussing PB&J sandwiches being tools of domination

Lol yea but I like other things too.

I think I could be happy forever with Little Anita's Christmas chile enchiladas & rellenos...and could afford it too!

(And we ate in a bunch of fancier places in Santa Fe but Little Anita's was still my favorite.)

Doesn't matter, can't take anything nut related to school anyway...so what's the point?

A flight I was on recently announced that due to consideration of people with possible peanut allergies all peanut products were prohibited from the flight including personal food items brought on board.

We done gone loco........

Dont I know it..:2sick1:

I spent time with the British and Australians....vegemite and Fosters beer were thier joke on the US.

How hungry do you have to be to scrape the gunk out of the bottom of a brewery tank and spread it on toast???

Yep, and instead of seeing it as a way to marginalize immigrant kids, sounds more like a great conversation starter for everyone involved to learn about other cultures. For a supposed melting pot, some people sure have some bizarre ideas of dealing with other cultures. Keeping them at arms length is nor the way to go about it. I love hearing the stories immigrants have about where they come from and what they do there that's different than here.

The irony is that if a white kid brought empanadas for lunch, he's be accused of cultural appropriation.
Enough of this b.s.

We have to stop apologizing for our culture and acting like it's something to be ashamed of. As long as your kid isn't making fun of someone who brings in a pita wrap instead of white bread, who cares?

Might as well be wearing a pith helmet...
