Kylie Jenner to be 'youngest self-made US billionaire'

I’m just not convinced it is so cut and dry.

How so?

Do you not think there's hundreds and hundreds of women out there creating new fashion, and holistic/healthy makeup on a daily basis?

Most lack having millions of dollars to get them noticed. Most lack having a famous family to get them noticed. Most lack having a reality TV show running for years to get them noticed.
Most don't have millions of subscribers to social media accounts. Most can't buy existing companies and turn them into their own. Most can't afford plastic surgery.

You simply can't ignore the place from which she started compared to the places the rest of the world starts.
You can't ignore the ginormous advantages she's had from birth.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. On one hand if she earned that $900M herself and didn’t inherit it she is “self-made”. But she was able to earn that based on her name. She inherited a name that is a valuable brand but she has made some good business decisions in deciding how to use that brand, or at least was smart enough to hire experts who advised her on how to utilize it.

So she is self-made in the way that Trump is self-made but not in the way that, say, Mark Cuban is self-made.

Yes, we apparently do. For me anyone that is self made is someone who doesn't sit on their butts all day and because of that makes more money than they had starting out.

That description represents the overwhelming majority of Americans. You must think Donald Trump is self made, as well, then.

No, I understand just fine. People don't want to admit that she's self made because she started out rich because of her family name. It would ruin the belief that the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor. Reality however shows that who is rich and who isn't fluctuates. And that is due to actions that each individual makes.

Self made =/= self unmade.

My overall disgust for all things Kardashian/Jenner should be no secret to anyone here.

Check off another thing that just galls my stones, calling anything Kylie does "self made".

What an absolute, outright in-your-face insult to anyone in the "real world" who is actually self-made.

Would you agree?
Do you consider Kylie's business success to be "self-made"?

No. She used her family's notoriety.

Well in a country where Trump is president, you can have a teenager just out of high school be a billionaire just because of her last name. And then you have particle physicists probing the nature of the universe and researchers finding cancer cures, still struggling to pay off their debt.

Nobody who is born into wealth and fame is self made, please. People who come from nothing and build empires are self made, not billionaires kids

Its the typical its easy to make money if you have money

But does everyone keep and expand on that money over an extended period of time? Like Kylie Jenner has.

Hand them 10 million and a competent investment strategist, and the answer becomes yes, overwhelmingly.

I think having many, many millions in seed money laying around for her to use to embark on business ventures kinda blows up the whole “self-made” idea.

not just seed money, all the connections she probably got, the favors, because of her fame. And the fame can help sell products

Not just her name, its the millions in backing, the ability to take risks. Rest of America can't do that, because if/when those risks don't pan out, you end up worse off than you were. Which, for many, worse off = poor, nearly destitute.

"self-made" simply means that she wasn't handed a billion dollars when a family member died or something like that. She had to do something to make it.

Of course she's had certain privileges that almost no one has, and apparently she has taken advantage of them. Good for her. I won't buy her stuff nor watch her tv shows or whatever the hell else they do, but I don't understand the purpose of ****ting all over them all the time. If you were to offer me a **** ton of money to act stupid on tv I'd do it. If you were to offer me a **** ton of money to put my name on some beauty products I'd do it as well. And if anyone hated me for it I'd laugh at them personally.

That too. Nobody’s buying cosmetics from Kylie Kowalski.

None of those agree.

She used her name. She was industrious. She was smart. Yes, she earned it.

She used her name, and her money, to make more money. Kinda like Trump...

It's a lot easier to get home when you're born on 3rd base. Having the money and time to have numerous plastic surgery procedures helps when you're selling your face and body (image).

From your first link:

"The definition of self made is something that is made by oneself or someone who has become successful through his own efforts."

She made the money through her own actions and business decisions. No One died and handed her a billion dollars. Just like I said.

You seem to be saying that "self-made" means that you made it with no help and no privilege at anytime. If that's what you're saying then please give me an example of someone who was never offered any help, assistance or privileges through their entire life and earned a billion dollars.

Like I said, this is a "I hate her so I'm gonna bitch about her" thread. She's had lots of privileges. Apparently she has taken full advantage of them. I don't know why I'm supposed to be all pissy.

I see. We're doing the "only count definition 1a, not 1b, 2a and 3 is right out". Yeah, you go with that. Real robust and intellectually satisfying. Lowest common denominator is really the only way to explore something.

He was born to a family that owned a dairy farm and had a history in dairy farming and he grew that into a huge business. But he had the privilege of being born in to that family with that knowledge and ability to send him to a foreign country for education.

Next?

Oh bull****.
