As of Friday, the town of Barrow, Alaska will not see the sun rise again until Jan. 22, 2017:

Located about 300 miles north of the Arctic Circle, the USA's northernmost city endures about two sunless months each winter, known as the polar night.

Because the Northern Hemisphere tilts away from the sun in autumn and winter, areas north of the Arctic Circle — within 23.5 degrees of the North Pole — endure more than two months with the sun never rising above the horizon, according to Weather.com.

While most of the "day" will be pitch black, residents of Barrow will still have a few hours of what's known as "civil" twilight, which occurs when the sun is just below the horizon. During that time, there is still sufficient light to see objects outside, Weather.com said.

This civil twilight period is about six hours long in late November and early January, but shrinks to about three hours in the heart of the polar night just before Christmas, weather.com said.

The sun will set in Barrow, Alaska, on Friday; its next sunrise is in January

There is a horror movie somewhat based on this called 30 Days of Night. It takes place in this town. Some residents leave during this period, but a majority stay. Someone sabotages the town's communications and destroys avenues of escape and when the sun disappears, vampires move in. The residents who stayed start getting picked off one by one. Led by the town's sheriff, they try to survive and fight back. It's actually a pretty good movie.

Thanks, Obama. ;)

That was a crazy documentary...

What?

They're changing the name?

"And when the sun finally peeks above the horizon in January, the town may have a new name. Voters in mid-October began the process of changing the city's name from the English "Barrow" back to the native Inupiaq "Utqiagvik," according to the Alaska Dispatch News."

"Utqiagvik"? Sure, I'll remember that!

Remember it? Hell, I can't even pronounce it. It's almost as bad as Romanian names... too many consonants stuck together.

That name looks like someone barfed alphabet soup.. No worries though, In my 57 years of life I have addressed "0"letters to Barrow,,Utqiagvik,, whatever the name is....

I do love Alaska though,, 2 trips to Anchorage for work. (Saw the northern lights) 3 ( soon to be 4 ) cruises..

Nah, Obama is so yesterday. It's 'thanks Trump' now.

Money you'll never collect says that no, it will still very much be "thanks, Obama".

For the bad, of course.
