Black Tenant Slams Neighbors' Noise Complain as Racist "White Tears"

This is not your typical noisy neighbor dispute.

In New York City’s Inwood neighborhood, a couple wrote their upstairs neighbor in their apartment building complaining about how he would “scream and stomp until almost 2 a.m.”

The noisy neighbor, Richard Brookshire, issued a blistering response accusing his neighbors of racial aggression and calling their note a “direct threat”.

“As a Black man, I take these overt actions as a direct threat to my physical and psychological well-being and as an act of violence upon me (see attached list of the 821 black men, women, and children killed by police or in police custody to date in 2016),” he wrote. “This threat cannot be taken lightly.”

Brookshire said that because he is black, he will make noise as he sees fit:

“In the words of Robert Jones Jr., ‘one of the greatest divides between white people and black people (or the wealthy and the not wealthy) is noise.’ Look forward to me continuing to make it at the volume in which I determine is acceptable.”

And here is Brookshire’s response, which he also posted on Facebook. In it, he tells his neighbors that he will “not be coerced to remedial action by your idle threats or seemingly pervasive white tears.”

As you can see, Brookshire signed his letter with the Twitter hashtags Your #VeryBlack Neighbor and #blacklivesmatter.

Brookshire later wrote on Facebook that his neighbors have yet to read his letter as they are still in their “blissful white slumber.” He also claims his super told him they have been reported for noise complaints in the past, but with NO cultural excuse.

Hopefully the white slumber ends soon, and the drama will continue with more angry notes!

Sooo... Remind me again, who's the "racist" here?

I swear, you can't make this crap up. Guy takes "playing the race card" to whole new levels.

Put the race card back inside the deck, please. Thank you.

Why don't you bring back for your avatar the emblem of slavery, like after the massacre at a black church in your state, and tell us what you *really* think

Which is probably that black people don't have any right other than to be whipped and starved by their white masters

What does this have to do with a nouse complaint?

Y'know, I wonder if the response from Mr. Brookshire might have been a little more measured if the original note had not been so snarky. "Please use learn your manners" is condescending. Besides, for all we know, Mr. Brookshire was not actually yelling or stomping around but simply walking in his apartment and speaking in his normal voice and the complaining neighbors just were overly sensitive to it due to the time.

If the guy was really screaming and stomping around until the wee hours of the morning (and I'm guessing this probably wasn't even the first time), I'd say some snark is probably warranted.

In any case, his response is borderline psychotic.

i.e. "I'm black so I can do whatever I want because you're racist... Oh, and I also called the cops and said you were threatening me. K, bye, white devils!"

I mean... Seriously?

Why dont you stick to this issue. Who is in the wrong here?

Hole.e.cow.

First letter was a lillte rude and consequently wasnt going to be very effective... if at all but DAMN. The response is freaking out of control. Racist. Threatening. A cause to be kicked out of the building perhaps. Imagine the ****storm that would create.

You'll be glad to know that I've actually completed that post.

Yeeeeaaahhh... If his "normal" walking around and speaking voice are loud enough to keep his neighbors up at night, he needs to grow the Hell up and change his behavior either way regardless.

From the way he talks in his response, however, it seems like he's aware that he's being at least somewhat loud and obnoxious, and just doesn't care because he feels entitled to it. The whole thing just seems kind of passive aggressive all the way around.

Had a neighbor years ago that did the same thing, gave them a taste of their own medicine, turn up my stereo full blast and left for a couple of hours, never had another issue with them.

i was thinking that too. If i believed myself not in the wrong and got a note like that i would probably try to get under his skin in return. If i thought my neighbor was a racist, i might've done the same and gotten all ridiculously defensive

If he was actually "shouting and stomping" at 2am though, that is one of the craziest tantrums i've seen. It all depends on what really happened

Had a roommate who would hit snooze on the alarm for *an hour* sometimes before finally getting up so i could go back to sleep. I threw the alarm out the window and told him we're using my alarm, i'm not hitting snooze even once and he can get up or miss class, his problem

He didn't say that at all. You've got an obvious agenda here. Considering he represents all of 1/37,600,000 black americans, you wanting us to believe this is proof of some victimhood trend is what's psychotic

Did he show any ability to understand or practice manners? Nope.

Are you kidding? He said almost exactly that.

He starts the letter off by referring to their complaints as "white tears," basically making it into a race thing right off of the bat. He then goes on to explicitly state that he reported them to the police and ACLU for "threatening" him, and then finishes it off by basically claiming that he has the right to be loud and obnoxious because he's black, and therefore feels like he's oppressed.

It's absurd.

What he represents is a rather troubling - aggressively "reverse racist" and combative - trend in political and cultural thought in this country, which seems to be becoming more and more common the more nonsense movements like "Black Lives Matter" pick up steam.

I didn't read past your first sentence because he didn't say that at all - "i'm black so i can do what i want." No...he said he empathized with sleep deprivation but doubted his actions were the cause. You read into it what you want, which is ill advised when making a thread

You're either lying, or you simply can't read.

“In the words of Robert Jones Jr., ‘one of the greatest divides between white people and black people (or the wealthy and the not wealthy) is noise.’ Look forward to me continuing to make it at the volume in which I determine is acceptable.”

This pretty much directly translates into "Black people make lots of noise. I feel we have the right. Deal with it."

That's before we even get into the clear racism involved in his calling the neighbors' concerns "white tears," or his claiming to report them to the police and ACLU for "racist threats."

Maybe snark could be understandable depending on circumstances (which none of us are actually privy to) but it was, for sure unproductive. In fact, how many times does Mr. Brookshire mention the tone of the initial note? I think that's what really bothered him. Not so much the noise complaint itself.

The guy probably does need some help. Preferably from a medical professional.
