A U.S. Army Abrams tank accidentally engaged another Abrams tank during gunnery practice.
The tank fired a training round, striking the other tank and injuring a crew member.
The two tanks were 2,600 meters apart, or 1.6 miles, at the time the incident took place.

IIRC during Desert Storm there were several Abrams that were destroyed by friendly fire from other Abrams tanks.

That depleted uranium armor saved their bacon.

There is a significant difference in the lethality of a training round and an APFSDS DU round.

No doubt. though IIRC at least one of the Abrams killed by blue on blue fire in Desert Storm was hit by multiple HEAT rounds.

It was a case of one Abrams firing on the other Abrams and once it did the other tanks in its squadron (is that the right term?) joined in with fire of their own.

4 tanks are a troop and four troops are a squadron.

The link only discussed the two tanks and that the Army has no comment pending an investigation into this fiasco.

At any rate there's a tanker or two likely to be reassigned to lawnmower repair.

As well there should be given it's really hard to rationalize banging one of your own guys.

Major difference, training rounds are usually lesser powered steel rounds. I know saddam learned that in the first gulf war, he used soviet steel penetrator rounds, which the soviet union long phased out because the only modern tank it could take out was an original m-60 with non composite armor. Well the soviet union kept them for training and sold them with export t-72 tank models, and let's say that steel penetrator round the soviets relegated to training barely hurt any abrahms, and knocked out zero of them.

If anybody might know when Trump's gonna bang on Putin for putting a bounty on US troops, inquiring minds would like to know also.

At Grafenwohr in '89 I believe, an M1 engaged two Bradleys during a night exercise. One soldier was killed in one of them, the other caught fire but the crew escaped with some burns I think.

Indeed.

PutinTrumpRowers have spent each day working hard to ignore the bounty hoping it will go away.

The Rowers never refer to it in denying it which is quite the acrobatic feat. Rowers never use the word 'bounty.'

It is further confirmation Conservatives have transmogrified the Republican Party into what we fought against throughout the 20th century to defeat abroad and that now we will defeat domestically, decisively. With finality.

Elaborate on what that has to do with the OP?

American troops getting banged in one way or another.

In the instance presented by the OP the Army is investigating.

In the case of Putin's bounty on American troops deployed abroad this is another factor in why Trump is on track to likely become the first Republican Potus to lose the military vote, since I don't know who, if any Republican Potus, ever.

Bummer ain't it over there on the PutinTrumpRowers Republican Conservative Right where you reside.

You PutinTrumpRowers have not denounced Putin's bounty on American troops deployed abroad.

Nor will you denounce it.

You Rowers won't even mention it to include avoiding absolutely using the word "bounty."

This is indeed expected given there is absolutely zero criticism of Trump by you who are the Members of His Cult.

I. Will. Speak. Slow. For. You. And. Use. Small. Words.

Not. A. trump. supporter.

Having said that, I get that you have a raging hard on for trump....I dont care; the OP has nothing to do with politics...go find a nice political thread to pound your pickle in.

Welcome to the new military where troops waste more time with social engineering, instead of training on procedures and equipment.

You would have to be a idiot to serve in the military today.

Go learn a trade. Make twice the money with 1/2 the BS.

Nobody gets away with giving Trump a free ride on Putin's bounty on US troops deployed abroad.

You asked me to connect this to the OP and I consider that I did do that.

If you want to holler against me while I hammer PutinTrump and their bounty against US troops then you and I are going to tangle no matter what. I should think you would welcome the hammering as complementary to your thread yet your focus is elsewhere, ie, on me for what I am doing that you find objectionable if not repugnant to your precious carpetmentalized thread and topic.

It is the sad consequences of playing a very deadly and dangerous game. I remember going through the obstacle course and realizing if I make a mistake I will die. We had no safety harnesses or nets. There was an ambulance standing by. That is how you knew that what you were doing was dangerous or deadly.

No, we are not going to tangle....easy enough to simply ignore you....I have no interest in trump, you, or whatever you consider "complimentary".

Ditto and thanks for the perspective.

So yes, when I myself went through obstacle courses in the 1960s Army was straight out about it, ie, if you got plugged crawling under heavy machine gun fire when you could hear the bullets whizzing right over your steel pot it meant you got a military funeral while the Army moved on to the next company of trainees. And you would be the immediate example of what not to do. That was it.

That was the obstacle course. On the machine gun firing range you did two things. You fired the MG at the stationary targets down range. You hit the targets and they went down. Then you yourself got sent downrange to handle the targets for the next round of shooters who themselves had been downrange judging your firing. So there you were downrange MG bullets zinging left and right of you as you had to look up at the target from behind a puny dirt mound to see if the troop pulling the trigger was hitting it or whether the troop's firing was what was zinging past your ears instead. Both happened of course so to be accurate and true to the troop firing you had to stick your head up into the hail of bullets coming on.

Whether it was the obstacle course or the MG firing range -- or whatever such as the mortar firing range -- nobody got hit which goes to prove that no matter who might be able to kill you they will do it if you let 'em. Lesson learned.
