USMC Removal of Public Displays of the Confederate Battle Flag

Re: USMC Bans Display of Confederate Flag on All Installations

The confederate flag was all over Vietnam during the Vietnam war. Black soldiers weren't happy about it.

It means radically different things to people depending on their race. It means "Southern pride" to one group and "racist lynchings" to another group.

I agree with the decision. The easiest thing to do is get rid of the Stars and Bars.

Hang it on your wall at home if you want, but remember it's offensive to millions of people.

link to official ruling -- REMOVAL PUBLIC DISPLAYS OF THE CONFEDERATE BATTLE FLAG > United States Marine Corps Flagship > Messages Display

That seems like a reasonable policy, but I might have a problem with the "Etc." if that includes something like a book or magazine with that image on (or in) it.

Re: USMC Bans Display of Confederate Flag on All Installations

Good move. The Confederate flag has, does, and will always represent the abhorrent institution of slavery and the millions who suffered under it. There is no acceptable circumstance under which it can be glorified.

Re: USMC Bans Display of Confederate Flag on All Installations

I guess I never thought about it, but it would be odd for our Military to be OK with or allow displays of the Confederacy. It would be like wearing the British Flag, or any other foreign power.

It is pretty amazing that military installations would be ok with a flag flown by traitorous men who seceded from the very union that the military protects and fights for.

It wasn’t flown by “traitorous” men, so one of premises is wrong.

As always, the Marines are leading the way

It's hard to find a Nazi flag being flown in Germany too! :peace

I can agree with you on this point - that whole "free press" thing, plus the need to include the images in any history book covering the period - BUT what about an officer or other command personnel who just happens to leave a book or magazine open to the page with the flag on it out on their desk when a darker-skin Marine comes into the office?

Tattoos could also fall under the "Etc" category.

Well, you just revealed yourself as one of those few ignorant Americans - or is it a deliberate denial that Attacking and Killing American military personnel and installations is an act of Treason?

One other "etc." concern is the use (inclusion?) of the stars and bars on (official) state flags and vehicle license plates.

The complete statement does give those specific items a 'pass'. The next act to examine would be whether or not the Marine flying one of those state flags has any connection to that state.

Hmm... what if they are currently stationed in that state, were born in that state or have that state as their home of record? It does seem reasonable to allow an exception for folks to display their state flag or keep their license plates while living, working or shopping on base.

Awards of medals, ribbons, badges etc issued to US forces by foreign governments are authorized for wear on US armed forces while in their uniforms and have been authorized for a very long time.

Pentagon has a list of US Congress approved and authorized awards and distinctions and by which governments. They're worn on the right side of the US military uniform at and above the breast pocket line (with certain other awards as indicated). Awards by UK government are among 'em of course.

Medals, ribbons, citations and awards issued by the Confederate States of America were prohibited then as they would be prohibited currently, absolutely, forever -- same as would be so by the Government of North Korea to name another such enemy of the USA as was the CSA.

The reason that many people display that flag is the know its offensive to others.

They can display this flag and be PC...

You're required to register your vehicle in the state in which you are stationed.

hypocrisy no ???

slavery in the USA lasted 84 years under the Stars & Bars and like the Union Rag it was a slavers flag many of your early presidents like the fabled George Washington had there own slave plantations ... your wealth and the wealth of several European nations like England/UK, France, Spain, Portugal and Belgium was down to the slave trade

so the Stars & Bars is as tainted a flag as the confederate flag

So we never had a civil war?
