Back in the old days men got drafted --- what were your options then?

I had qualified for the NESEP program and was intending to go to Purdue to become an engineering officer when a less sympathetic doctor caught on to my eyes and determined that they were not good enough to be an officer or a gentleman. Program canceled. I had already put in two years of Navy schooling for a specialty tech position including a bit of instructor time so some negotiations ensued. A deal was struck and they let me stay in the Navy but with the provision that I could not go to sub school nor could I serve on a combat ship.

That led to a specialty assignment and a higher than God security clearance to manage the installation of equipment that didn't exist on platforms that weren't going any where special for a handful of GS-17s most of whom only had one name.

Combat happened quite by accident and I lived through it because the other guy was about 2/3 my size and age, not because of any training, competence or skill. I got lucky and that was quite enough for me. I have the utmost respect for those who did that day in and day out.

No. With the war winding down, my status was becoming confused so I took my discharge after 8 years and returned to school on my own. Sometimes I miss those days and sometimes I don't.

Options to not be drafted were stated in the law.

2. Being in college and obtaining written permits.
3. A serious illness. The deaf and blind never got drafted. A heart problem would keep you from serving.

In my day there was a local draft board and a district draft board. Plenty of opportunities for graft for those with connection and money. You stated in an earlier post, that you thought Trump received a college deferment. Doncha think that Trump would be touting that instead of not remembering which foot had the condition?

Well there are always layers up layers of Government so I do not doubt your claim. I do not believe I know Trump well enough to know why he does this or that act.

I think this is a phony issue is all.

If I had been drafted at 18-24, I would have left the country and never look back.

Given all that is current, I agree. His “love’ for all things military just rings hollow. In the same category as someone of his physical appearance calling out others for theirs.....

I was tweaking your statement about the government of South Vietnam. Thus the "couldn't help myself".

I suspect you are wrong about Trump's support. While much of his hardcore base is still with him, a lot of unhappy people are out there making noise about the poor handling of the virus. Since I live right on the edge of the New York circle of infection I get this from a lot of folks unhappy about having too few tests available and about having to fight with the government just to purchase PPE for the state. This is the last state to reopen and even then it is being done slowly. True this is not one the bastions of Trumps strength but it may reflect some of the feeling in the rest of the country.

Unless the virus and the government lower the voter turnout, there will be more people voting in November.

Trump was able to fenagle out of the draft because of fake bone spurs, he, because his father was someone with a lot of money and power, I'm not sure I believe you on that point on bone spurs. This article in Military Times

See, guys like you and me can't fenagle like the rich can. I don't know how they do it, but they do do it. If it weren't bone spurs, it would have been something else.

I, however, didn't do anything, I just registered for the draft, classified 1A, and preyed I wasn't called.

When I was 19, I still wasn't called, but then the draft lottery came, and they only drafted up to #195, my number was 207

I beat going to viet nam by 12 numbers. Turns out, when I reached my 30s, I joined the Navy, anyway. I got my honorable discharge just before Desert Storm started.

I'm just lucky.
