Lawmakers Ask Trump to Extend National Guard Missions for One Crucial Day

Many pandemic-response missions are slated to end just before Guard troops become eligible for federal benefits.

Lawmakers are calling on President Trump to not end National Guard deployments by June 24 because that could prevent many from becoming eligible for federal benefits. Politico reported on Tuesday that the Trump administration is ordering a “hard stop” on the deployments of over 40,000 National Guard members who are helping states with their coronavirus responses. For those who were first deployed in March—when the president declared a national emergency for the pandemic—they would be short one day needed to qualify for federal retirement and education benefits. The news outlet said Thursday the administration is now considering extending the deployments until July, but no decision has been made yet.

Over 70 House members called on Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Wednesday to extend the deployments. “This deadline would leave many guardsmen just shy of the 90 days of service required to qualify for certain benefits, like the Post-9/11 GI Bill,” they wrote. “While we hope this is a coincidence, not policy, we request an explanation of the choice of expiration date. To battle this unprecedented crisis, we asked our neighbors in uniform to serve our nation in its time of need.” Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., sent a similar letter to President Trump on Wednesday. “States remain dependent on the support of National Guard personnel and there are no indications these needs will disappear by June 24th,” he wrote.

Place your bets. Will the Trump administration extend active NG pandemic duty for at least 1 additional day (June 25), or will they be a dick about it.

Republicans pay lip service to "supporting the troops", but when it comes to actually supporting them by funding the VA, ensuring benefits or keeping them out of pointless wars, they'll usually opt to **** them over.

Y'all still believe this bull****? :lamo

All the evidence is on our side.

Republicans only care about the troops when they are needed for a fight, on election day, and various holidays.

There's been no Army, nor DOD regulations posted that prove that this isn't bull****.

There's no early retirement, no magic benefits and no early drawing of retirement benefits.

You boy Obama capped military pay raises, but none of you gave two ****s, so spare me the bull**** about how you care about the troops.

Hit a sore spot have we?

why would Trump care? does it affect his $$$$ or ratings?

For every 90 days serving during a federal emergency, Guard members can move up their retirement date by three months. Ninety days of active service also qualifies members for 40 percent off the tuition at a public college or university.

I suggest that you brush up on the Post-9/11 GI bill.

Army National Guard: Active Duty Under Title 10 USC or Title 32 USC (Full-Time National Guard Duty)

.....

*Reserve Component Soldiers may qualify for retired pay prior to age 60 under (10 USC 12731 (f)) and NDAA 2008. Section 647 reduces the age for receipt of retired pay by three months for each aggregate of 90 days of "specified duty' performed in any fiscal year after the date the bill became law (January 28, 2008). "Specified duty" includes active duty (excluding active duty for training) or "active service" under Title 10 USC Sections 688, 12301(a), 12301(d), 12302, 12304, 12305, and 12306 and Title 32 USC, Section 502(f), if responding to a national emergency declared by the President or supported by federal funds.

Care to apologize to the people you called liars?

Obama did a fine job keeping his promise to end wars.

My bet is that they will be a dick about it.

The Coronavirus has not gone away, is showing no signs of going away, and is likely to surge due to the ending of some of the shelter in place rules. There is no way ending the National Guard mission is a good idea.

I object to our national guard being short-changed during a pandemic and when we should be enabling more persons to spend money to keep capital circulating in our economy.

So should you:

Served at least 90 days on active duty (either all at once or with breaks in service) on or after September 11, 2001,

Do you know what "aggregate" means? Let's see if you can figure it out.

Mobilizing NG soldiers isn't going to do **** for the economy.

So what other days did these National Guard troops get under title 10 or 32 to aggregate into 90 days?

So, you do know what aggregate means? Ok, as long as you get that part.

Title 10 deployments are a dime a dozen nowadays.

The kung flu mobilizations probably rounded off past mobilizations and those troops were left with a few days left over.

Again, I ask: which title 10 or 32 deployments have these NG troops had this fiscal year?

You're just asking stupid questions because your argument got blown to ****.
