Understaffed Veterans Affairs Scrambles to Confront COVID-19

So then, the article was in error when it said this.....

How can it be properly funded and still be short tens of thousands of healthcare professionals? Where is the money going then?

The needs for property rehabs and modern equipment are eating up funding. Staffing was far worse a mere 5 years ago, and only improved because of consolidation of facilities.

Obviously, my point is you have no idea what Trumps' higher expense has produced by looking at that chart. Has it produced better medical care for veterans? That chart doesn't tell you that. So, I repeat, you have no idea what that chart means.

The chat does tell you that, more spending on essential vetereran bonuses and less on useless ****

Didn't they medically retire you? When you're medically retired you can use Tricare and you don't have to use the VA system. I was medically retired in '69 and I use private doctors and hospitals at Tricare's expense.

I did opt for tricare, found better coverage later through private insurance. Much more expensive, but much better for I and my family. Tricare does have some very severe restrictions.

I've had no problem with Tricare. I use the Mass General, one of the top hospitals in the world, and their doctors. Rarely does it cost me.

Stop it, TypicalRussian. Trump is falsifying that he inherited a broken system from Obama but has done much to break it since.

Understaffed Veterans Affairs Scrambles to Confront COVID-19

The VA’s patients are disproportionately elderly and many have war-related health conditions that could make them more vulnerable to the coronavirus.

Much like senior citizen facilities across the nation, VA hospitals are woefully unprepared and unequipped to deal with the looming burst of COVID-19 infections.

And.....................??

I needed options they did not cover.

Trump is blamable, but why not blame other people too, why always Trump??

Trump is not the worst president in 150 years, that title goes to Johnson

Since we are playing the blame game-I blame napoleon for this

Trump's worse than Nixon. Trump is responsibl. He's the frucjpkjng president. He says he isn't responsible. Hes a classic narcissist. I know one, and they are geniuses at getting other people to fight their pathetic battles.

Typically...leftists will use a tragic situation to try to score political points. In THIS instance the Trump derangement ****s squarely in their face.

The VA is the socio/commie's single payer wet dream example here in the US...and just like the single payer systems in Italy that failed to deal with this, the VA also isnt staffed commonly to handle an unforeseen pandemic. So much for the single payer model.

What a shocker.

But hey...in fairness to the VA, the reality is that NO ONE and certainly not a single payer government funded healthcare system would be funded at pandemic levels on a regular basis. EVERY system will struggle when facing this kind of a problem.

But reliably...we will always be able to count on leftists to use victims to try to score political points.

That's a good question... so I looked into it and found that even though Trump raised overall spending, he did make cuts relative to the Obama spending levels on the VA Hospital System, but he offset that by increasing support for veterans seeking health care outside of the VA system, in accordance with the Veterans Choice Act of 2014. If you take the "Hospital & Medical Care for Veterans" category from my last graph, and break it down even further, here's where the money went:

Hospital & Medical Care for Veterans.jpg

Notice the decrease under Trump for "Medical Services" - that's the VA system.... and the corresponding increase for "Medical Community Care" - that's money paid via the Veterans Choice Act to Non-VA healthcare providers to offset costs for veterans.

You realize that when we refer to "VA", we're talking about the Dept. of Veterans Affairs and not the Commonwealth of Virginia, right?

I was wondering about that? Did he really think we were talking about Virginia?

Uhhhh, I know, The OP was talking about Virginia

Im ethincally Russian:roll:

So's your spelling. My ancestors first came here in the early 16th century form northwestern Russia. The Russians did not view them as ethnic Russians. Technically, they were correct, but then neither were those descended from the Rus who prided themselves on illiteracy, and who were Scandinavian tribes people force out of Scandinavia during tribal wars they lost. Instead my folk were indigenous to the region, later intermarried with other Eurasian peoples, and hated the Rus and theirs, hunted them mercilessly until Piotr devised a truce. It's a complicated world. However, you've made a case for "we are all connected, by stupidity."

I have been dealing with the VA for decades now. And in my opinion it is a steaming pile of crap, and has been for decades. And this is not a "Democrat" or "Republican" thing. I had issues with them under every President I have had to deal with them, going all the way back to President Clinton.

Unless you are at the magic "30% disabled", their treatment is often crap. And they will fight tooth and nail to deny any additional care or treatment, downgrading anything they think they can get away with.

I have seen my 10% knee injury downgraded to 0%. I have had hearing damage that was diagnosed in 1991 and is now permanent tinnitus which they also say is worth 0%. I have seen my 50% sleep apnea downgraded to "it does not exist". Even though in the statement they sent me after my sleep study they said "While the patient has extended periods of no respiration and lowered O2 levels, he does not show any symptoms of sleep apnea". Like seriously, WTF? That is the classic definition of sleep apnea. I have not even bothered to put in a claim for my time at Camp Lejeune, I have talked to at least 6 others that were there at the same time with medical conditions much worse than mine which were all denied.

Trying to get treatment for my PTSD and depression, also a joke. I have not been to an appointment since November, each one has been cancelled. Call to get it rescheduled, go back to the bottom of the list. A month or so I finally make a new one, then it is cancelled.

And whenever I see people screaming it is the fault of the President, I write them off as political morons. It was like that under Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton also. And it will likely continue under the next 3 Presidents the same way. And I have been saying for almost 30 years now that if you want me to believe in "Government Health Care", fix the VA first and prove to me it can work.

And did this shortage appear magically in 2017?

No, it has been that way for decades. It was short under the last President, and the one before that, and the one before that. Now show us an article showing that under this Administration 40k medical staff were fired creating a shortage.

Heck, my wife recently gave up nursing because the pay in the medical field is crap. And she had worked for the VA during her internship, and applied for the entire 5 years we were in El Paso. Never even an interview. The fact is, they have serious issues in their hiring practices. I looked into it myself last year when I applied. 8 out of 10 job openings I found listed being a current or past VA employee as a requirement to apply.

I did however apply for 2 positions I was qualified for. And even with my background, experience, Veteran Preference and Disabled Vet preference I got back "we have better qualified candidate" letters within 2 weeks. Yet even 3 months later one of those positions is still listed as available.

Myself, I do not think they want to fix the problems.
