State of Defense 2020: Special Report

Our annual service-by-service look at the big questions facing the U.S. military.

defense-large.jpg

2/20/20
As the dust settles from impeachment and a near-war with Iran, it has become clear that President Donald Trump plans to use his fourth year in office to push for dramatic changes to the Defense Department that focus the military on preparing for war with China and Russia — changes Defense Secretary Mark Esper aims to make “irreversible.” We’ll see about that. One thing is certain: under Trump, nothing is certain. The president, elected in part by people weary of U.S. military interventions overseas, has sought largely unsuccessfully to “bring home” U.S. troops. Pentagon officials continue to insist that U.S. troops will leave Syria as soon as they have ensured “the enduring defeat of ISIS,” something the president has repeatedly and falsely claimed has already been done. But then there’s the question of all the other far-flung counterterrorism missions in which U.S. is engaged around the globe, like in Africa. As the administration tries to refocus its attention on great power competition with China and Russia, will more CT missions see reductions in 2020? What will that mean for the Pentagon? We took a service-by-service look at these questions and more. Read on:

Trump in anger.
The Pentagon conducted an audit. According to Anthony Carpaccio of Bloomberg, the defense Department made "$ 35 trillion in accounting adjustments " in 2019 easily surpassing the $30.7 trillion in such adjustments recorded in 2018. Jan 23, 2020
The Pentagon’s $35 Trillion Accounting Black Hole

Write off. Piece of cake!
But this is not corruption, in any way! No, no...

I'm deeply touched that a 'Stalin' Communist cares about Pentagon accounting.

Come on over once you straighten out the Kremlin.

It isn't what you think. It is not as though those trillions of dollars were actually missing.

You see, this is a very important case. Thieves in the Pentagon steal people's money, and in order to steal more, they need a larger budget (already biggest in the world), and to justify this large budget, they need a Scarecrow. for example, Russia. But the build-up of the military budget is very dangerous, because like a ukrainian plane, shot down by mistake recently, a nuclear war can also accidentally start... Therefore, theft in the Pentagon is too dangerous, not to pay close attention to it.

Do you actually believe the money was "stolen"?

This isn't the USSR/Russia where military gear "dissappear" for a few Rubles.

How could you think that! The Pentagon doesn't steal anything! And when in the 80s they sold plastic toilet seats to the Pentagon for $ 640, it was not theft at all, but a celebration of the free market. Now that the toilet seat is probably worth $ 1,000.

And don't compare the socialist USSR and capitalist Russia. In the USSR, one cartridge could not "disappear".

You say funny things.

Nuclear wars don't start accidentally.

You're kidding right? IIRC in Viktor Suvorov's "Inside the Soviet Army" in the U.S.S.R. entire divisions would "disappear".

According to Suvorov, Stalin was going to attack Hitler. You gave a very bad example of the author as an authority. And do not even try to argue, for 30 years since the release of "Icebreaker ", his fantasies have been thoroughly exposed by historians.

And none of those resulted in a nuclear war. Or even an errant launch.

Most of those incidents were not even close to causing a nuclear war.

Now I can sleep in peace. Thank you. But I don't know why they banned bacteriological weapons, there wasn't a single bacteriological war...

News from october 2019 "In the state of North Dakota on the basis of the US Air Force Minot, marijuana was discovered. One of the servicemen was caught smoking weed during his shift.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that the base contains Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles ..."

One person can't launch U.S. ballistic missiles. Even if they have all the launch codes on hand.

Suvorov was out of his element in things outside his direct experience. On the other hand he turned out to be 100% accurate on several things he had direct experience in that western observers were completely unaware of at that time. Like the often lethal hazing and abuse that Soviet military personnel inflict on new soldiers.

Oh, there's bottom to the pit of things that one can think. Actually, "thinking" never enters into it. It's really standard rightwing knee-jerk dumb****tery.

Sometimes one person is enough for nuclear war. If this is a very dumb politician:
"Influential US senator Lindsey Graham is putting strong pressure on Trump, demanding the establishment of an American no-fly zone over the North of Syria"

Interesting stuff. I need to carve out some time to read in detail. Thanks for posting.

In Putin's Russia perhaps, but not here in the US.
Of course! And in the suitcase that a man in military uniform drags behind every US President, probably his lunch and a pair of socks...

Weak is the nation that must exclusively rely on its nuclear forces.

Moscow has precious little power projection. It's why the Kremlin confines itself to bullying its near-abroad neighbors.
