Those guys have been hiding beside a road waiting for their enemy to come by for umpteen generations. There's no winning there for anyone who isn't Afghan

And no, there has not been "18+ years of sustained effort". We are barely using enough force in that theater to advance, trying to keep the enemy off-position and minimizing civilian casualties. Do not even begin to think that they are the same thing, look no further than what we did to Iraq in 3 days. The US could crush any opposition if desired, but the issue then becomes civilian casualties, which would be unacceptable.

So tell us, what would you have us do? It is all so easy to be snarky, but much more difficult to actually come up with your own idea.
If our military mission is not to "crush the opposition" then we should never have sent them in.

I don't see the Taliban sticking to their agreements. They've been fighting so long I don't think they even know what they want anymore, only that they must resist change at gunpoint. It's part of the Pashtun warrior ethos: it's who they are.

No govt will stand unless we stay there forever, this lesson should have been learned from the soviets, they left afghanistan not because they were defeated militarily but defeated economically, had they not collapsed the soviets would likely still be there today in no better position than america is now. The lesson here being that afganistan is extremely tough and costly to control, and any govt will get overthrown we leave them, the soviets left afghanistan with a fully functional govt and military but their military and govt collapsed shortly after the soviets left, with america leaving it will likely be the same.

It becomes the question do we want to stay there forever or cut our losses, there is a reason that afghanistan is know as the graveyard of empires, the persian empire and other empires tried to take it, in more modern times britain and russia pre soviet union tried to control it, then the soviets then america, to date controlling the country has proven to be a fools errand going back to ancient times.
