Navy to name a ship after Doris Miller

Seems you Lie every day and it appears to you enjoy too. It's a shame !!

Cool story.

Meanwhile, back at the topic, I want a USS Taffy 3.

I was stationed at Cecil, before they closed it down(they had just made the announcement shortly before I got out). My squadron deployed to the Ike.

I was fortunate to rarely go to Norfolk. The Saratoga was at Mayport. The Independence was in the Philly shipyard.

I'm not a Navy type; Are vessels ever named after Task Forces ?

I know a few have been named after battles.

None are to my knowledge, but Taffy 3 deserves it. A group of destroyer escorts and escort carriers, with no armor, gets found by the main Japanese force of destroyers through battleships(Yamato, Nagato, Kongo and Haruna...damn good BBs). Long story short...we won, though at high cost. The escort carriers and DDEs where so flimsy Japanese shells passed through the ships without hitting anything solid enough to detonate the shell. Truly amazing. Right up there with the Battle of Friday the 13th in terms of improbably outcomes.

Cuba Gooding Jr. played him in 2001s Pearl Harbor.

He was also portrayed in Tora Tora Tora.

Thank you; I also didn't know this.

I really enjoy reading threads such as these. I'm usually overwhelmed by the acronyms and jargon, but at least I've learned what the UCMJ is.

NOB sucks. Always has, and always will.

Thank god I was over at Little Creek for 8 of the 10 years I did ships in this area.

"A large Japanese fleet has been contacted. They are fifteen miles away and headed in our direction. They are believed to have four battleships, eight cruisers, and a number of destroyers. This will be a fight against overwhelming odds from which survival cannot be expected. We will do what damage we can."

Thanks for the post, I looked up one of the online accounts. I didn’t see how the name “Taffy 3” came to be. Where did it come from?

He already got one. The USS Miller, a Knox class frigate in commission from ‘73 to ‘95.

Doris Miller, hero he may be, absolutely should not have an aircraft carrier named after him. Give him a Burke.

It’s absurd that the new Ford wasn’t named the USS Franklin D Roosevelt.

I was surprised that he got a carrier as well.......very!

Not that I am complaining

Jesse L. Brown should have a carrier before Miller, imo!

I am complaining. There are Medal of Honor recipients who went far above and beyond the call compared to what Miller did and they have destroyers named after them. It’s a slap in the face to all of those men to name a carrier after Miller.

It is a slap to no one.

Carriers have been named after statesmen, explorers, presidents battles, famous battles....

Why not Doris Miller?

Because he doesn't deserve it. It's absurd that a guy who won the Navy Cross for carry wounded sailors off a damaged ship should have a carrier named after him, while John Basilone, a Medal of Honor recipient who was awarded that medal for almost singlehandedly preventing the collapse of US defensive lines during the Battle of Guadalcanal at the cost of third degree burns on his hand and arm from hand-carrying a heavy machine gun that was literally red hot from the amount of rounds fired, only has a destroyer named after him. There are other examples I can bring up of Medal of Honor recipients who the decision to name a carrier after Miller dishonors if you would like.

Yes, Basilone got a DD. Not all Americans who earned the medal of honor have a ship named after them. Nor is a Medal of Honor required. Winston Churchill didn't rate a medal of honor, did he? Did the Sullivans do more than die to get a DD named after them? How about USS Stetham?

Are the USS Sullivans, The USS Winston Churchill and USS Stetham insults to MoH winners?

Nope, but naming Destroyers and Frigates after people like that is a tradition. Naming aircraft carriers after cooks who won a Navy Cross for carrying wounded sailors is not. Carriers should be named for Presidents or the original handful of ships of the US Navy (Enterprise, Intrepid, Constellation, etc). And yes, I think it was wrong to name carriers after Stennis and Vinson too. Nimitz, as the guy who won the Pacific War at sea, deserves one.

No, the tradition for DDs is Naval Heroes. Not just people.

And he did more than just ferry the injured.

But hey. Its your opinion. I have no problem with it.

Miller's situation was very unique at that point and time in the Navy.

He was the lowest of the low on board the West Virginia, as his duties were that of the typical black ships serviceman who basically served meals, did laundry, and cleaned. He was penned up on board a ship surrounded by 1200 shipmates that probably didn't like him very much due to his color and a lack of respect for his job. (shine boy)

He had every right to run for cover when he realized the ship was severely damaged, fire every wheres, and and still being heavily strafed.

Instead, he went running from spot to spot on the ship offering himself for what ever he could do. After carrying many wounded white shipmates to safety, he was ordered to assist two officers by feeding ammunition to the Browning .50 Cal machine guns, but was already firing one of the Browning's while the officers attention was diverted to many other things happening at the moment. The white officers saw that Miller was doing fine with the weapon and actually acted as his ammo feeder.

If I was in Miller's shoes in that situation, I probably would have said "have fun white boy's....I'm outta here"

Stennis and Vinson were racists, Stennis in the Senate and Vinson in the House and each was shamelessly blatant about it.

So a little balance here wouldn't hurt. It would be excellent indeed.

The society created the armed forces to serve it, protect it, defend it. The most effective armed forces reflects the best of the society, its culture and its civilization.

To Wit: In July 2016, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus advised Congress that he would name the Military Sealift Command's John Lewis-class oilers after prominent civil rights leaders, with the second to be named for gay rights activist Harvey Milk.[3] Milk served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake (ASR-13) and held the rank of lieutenant (j.g.) at the time of his honorable discharge.[3] The ship was officially named at a ceremony in San Francisco on 16 August 2016.[4] It is the first U.S. Navy ship named for an openly gay leader.[5] The first cut of steel occurred on 13 December 2019, marking the beginning of construction of the vessel.[6]

Hence the USNS Harvey Milk T-AO-206 USN Sealift Command

USNS John Lewis T-AO-205 USN Sealift Command

USS Gabrielle Giffords LCS 10 USN Littoral Combat Ship

The LCS 10 warship is named for former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The selection of Gabrielle Giffords honors the former congresswoman from Tucson, Arizona who is known for supporting the military and veterans, advocating for renewable energy and championing border security. Giffords resigned from Congress to recover from wounds she sustained in an assassination attempt in 2011.

Former Secretary of the Navy, Ray Mabus, selected the LCS 10 namesake and said it is appropriate that the ship is named for Gabrielle Giffords, whose name is “synonymous with courage when she inspired the nation with remarkable resiliency and showed the possibilities of the human spirit.”

While we have or did have -- or have again -- the carriers Washington, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Big John Kennedy, Ford, Reagan, GHW Bush, we have certain other Potus who got smaller ships as their namesake. Indeed, the USNA grad Jimmy Carter was notoriously opposed to the USN carrier program so the former submariner got the USS Jimmy Carter SSN-23 in 2005 (almost anyone who meets Jimmy looks down to find him ha). LBJ got the USS Lyndon B. Johnson DDG 1002.

Moreover and lest we forget, it took a bit of horse-trading to get CVN-76 named for Reagan because Reagan was still living at the time. So Billy Boy Clinton agreed but only after the Reagan Right accepted the quid pro quo carrier the Harry S. Truman.

No USN ship meanwhile and probably forever has or is scheduled to have the selected Potus namesake of: Nixon, Clinton, GW Bush, Barack Obama. Trump is of course incumbent Potus so some of us have made -- in advance of Trump's exit -- the recommendation Trump have a Navy Garbage SCOW bear his namesake.
