The Navy says the Farragut was initially unable to persuade the Russian vessel to alter course.

A Russian warship "aggressively approached" a US Navy destroyer while it was operating in the North Arabian Sea Thursday, ignoring warnings from the US vessel and increasing the risk of a collision, the US Navy said Friday. Video of the incident, which was obtained by CNN, shows the Russian warship rapidly approaching the USS Farragut, coming as close as 180 feet to the US ship before changing course, according to two defense officials. The incident is the latest example of a close encounter between US and Russian military forces that American officials have described as unsafe and provocative. It comes roughly seven months after another incident in the Pacific when US and Russian warships came so close the US ship had to perform an emergency maneuver to avoid a collision. "On Thursday, Jan. 9, while conducting routine operations in the North Arabian Sea, USS Farragut was aggressively approached by a Russian Navy ship," the US Navy's Fifth Fleet, which oversees naval operations in the Middle East, said in a statement. "Farragut sounded five short blasts, the international maritime signal for danger of a collision, and requested the Russian ship alter course in accordance with international rules of the road. The Russian ship initially refused but ultimately altered course," the statement said, adding "While the Russian ship took action, the initial delay in complying with international rules while it was making an aggressive approach increased the risk of collision."

The Russian vessel ultimately turned away after bridge-to-bridge radio communication was established with the US destroyer. A US Navy official says that the Farragut is part of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier group and the Farragut is tasked with intercepting potential enemy ships to prevent them from approaching the aircraft carrier. Following the June incident, the US Navy accused a Russian warship of acting in an unsafe manner by coming within 100 feet of the USS Chancellorsville, forcing the US ship to perform an emergency maneuver to avoid a collision. In the video taken from the American ship, the two ships come so close that Russian sailors can be seen appearing to sunbathe on the stern of their vessel.
The Russian military will keep pushing on all fronts as long as they believe Donald Trump will not call them out.

Trump isn’t interested in stopping Russian 2020 election interference, only in covering it up.

    This is not new.

This is hardly new, it has been going on for decades now. It is just that those with the attention span of a gnat have forgotten all about it and are now in panic mode now that it is back.

I am old enough to remember such movies as Countdown to Looking Glass. Or movies like Top Gun. Such things were fairly common until the late 1980's, so common in fact that the events were rarely even reported.

A Soviet bomber off the coast of California? US and Soviet ships playing games of chicken with destroyers in various oceans and seas around the world? It happened all the damned time. Just as we had bombers flying just off of their coast, and did the exact same thing back at them.

But they closed down 30 years ago, and only recently returned to doing such games. And suddenly it is like it has never happened before.

My father used to talk about during the 70's and 80's in the navy how it was common for us ships near anything soviet even if 100 miles away would get soviet jets to buzz them a few hundred feet above the ship, and the us navy would launch an aircraft to do the same if a ship was within reach they could buzz. Basically he called it a cat and mouse game of showing off that sometimes came close to actual war, ie a russian mig or a us f-14 buzzing the opposing sides ship armed at close range could easily cause panick and a shootdown of the jet.

Ok if this ship ramming thing is going to be a norm, I say we need to convert some old destroyers into modern trireme's and make the game of chicken more interesting.

We have no more old destroyers. The last administration sold them all to China so they could be turned into razor blades.

We used to have hundreds of ships held in the reserve fleet. I doubt if we have more than 2 dozen left today. And the only USS designated Navy ship left in the mothball fleet is the USS Nassau LHA-4. Every single other USS warship has been sunk or scrapped.

We do have a few at the NISMF, but those are already slated for sale to foreign governments, or used as targets or artificial reefs. We have 2 TICO cruisers there, and 19 Perry class frigates. The TICOs will probably be scrapped, and the Perry class ships are very popular in foreign navies so those will ultimately be sold (except those already tasked with being used as targets).

The only Destroyer left is the Sherman class USS Barry (launched in 1955). It has already been largely stripped to the hull, and is awaiting final disposal.
