Kurdish troops in the Syrian town of Manbij, near the border with Turkey

10/14/19
WASHINGTON — American commandos were working alongside Kurdish forces at an outpost in eastern Syria last year when they were attacked by columns of Syrian government tanks and hundreds of troops, including Russian mercenaries. In the next hours, the Americans threw the Pentagon’s arsenal at them, including B-52 strategic bombers. The attack was stopped. That operation, in the middle of the American-led campaign against the Islamic State in Syria, showed the extent to which the United States military was willing to protect the Syrian Kurds, its main ally on the ground. But now, with the White House revoking protection for these Kurdish fighters, some of the Special Forces officers who battled alongside the Kurds say they feel deep remorse at orders to abandon their allies. “They trusted us and we broke that trust,” one Army officer who has worked alongside the Kurds in northern Syria said last week in a telephone interview. “It’s a stain on the American conscience.” “I’m ashamed,” said another officer who had also served in northern Syria. Both officers spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid reprisals from their chains of command. And the response from the Kurds themselves was just as stark. “The worst thing in military logic and comrades in the trench is betrayal,” said Shervan Darwish, an official allied with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

I feel for our in-theater SOF and the Kurds. Dealt a super-crappy hand by a super-crappy president.

Why are you calling Trump's choice a "doctrine"?

On what did Trump base this choice to aid Turkey and abandon the Kurds who we had been helping for years?
It doesn't seem to be the product of some state department inter-agency strategy, or a military-advised strategy.

Trump in a call with the leader of Turkey, and he decided based presumably on an ask from Turkey? Was it for Trump Tower Istanbul? Or something else?
Let me know what you find out, you seem to be really trying to ferret out exactly what happened!

Best forget him, seeing how he's been contaminating practically all forums with his opinionated but otherwise totally irrelevant prattle.

There are like 100+ on the forums, 95% Trump "supporters", its hard to keep track of them all.

Yeah, I'm confident many in the military would disappointed when Patton didn't get his way and the US military didn't go to war against Russia in WW2 too.

The fanatically degree most Democrats want the USA to go to war against our NATO ally Turkey, a nuclear weapons power - is predictable since the Democratic Party is the party of War and Death - and to use war to destroy the United States.

The Democratic Party was created as the party of racism, social division, war and death - the party of genocide of Native Americans, and then the sedition party of War and Death in the Civil War.

If you do the math, over 90% of American war deaths have been under Democratic Party leadership since the creation of the Democratic Party. Of course the Democratic Party wants war with Syria. It wants war everywhere - whatever gets the most people killed, particularly Americans.

If only the Democratic Party could figure out any way to get American cities destroyed with nuclear weapons maybe then at least some malcontent self-hating Democrats could start to be happy.

I sure hope you get to meet one of the Berets and get to say that to his face.

I know 2 people who were in intense combat in the ME theater. One a Marine squad leader at the height of fighting in the Helmand district of Afghanistan and the other in air attacks in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere not to be mentioned. One is my own child.

Both state in no uncertain terms all the killing and everything we are doing over there is a waste of time. We can stay there forever acting as their international police force - killing and being killed by everyone else on every side - because they have been doing so for over 3,000 years - killing each other, killing any outsiders - endless killing on clan, ethnicity, religion, race, nationality... and the moment we leave it will be as if we were never there.

Yes, I understand how INTENSELY most new fascist progressive Democrats LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE wars.

There is NO ONE the next age fascist progressive Democrats would MORE hate than Anti-Vietnam War protesters. Most current progressive Democrats would furiously ranting and sobbing we are abandoning our allies.

You have got to be kidding.

What kind of rant is that? It makes no sense.

The US military was there to fight against Isis and the Kurds were great allies in that. and it kept Turkey at bay so as to not upset the US by attacking a US ally with US troop advisors.

Trump made a stupid move that made the US less safe..not more safe.

That's an odd thing to assert for a guy who gleefully celebrates the slaughter of Kurds.

Well, I guess now we'll see how scared Turkey is of Trump now that he's had to "talk tough" to them. If they think he's a paper tiger, what's Trump going to do?

This is the third time I have seen this article posted.

Who cares what about a few pansies think? They are American soldiers. They fight for America, not the Kurds. This is quagmire, even a bigger quagmire than Vietnam. Was Nixon wrong in pulling out of Vietnam?

The United States is not a police-force. We cannot be involved in every single civil war in the world.

You're just spouting politics. You don't walk out on allies that have fought and died with you.

A rather big difference between US Special Forces sticking with the Kurds, and 500,000 troops fighting in Vietnam.

We have done it before, several times towards the Kurds. They die so we don't.

And it was a mistake then. It's chicken ****, cowardly. This is not the time to be reducing the number of allies we have in the world who are willing to go to battle with us. The Special Forces are more than willing to continue fighting with the Kurds.

allies? The Kurds are not a nation, Trust me, the U.S has enough allies. Tell the United Nations to fight with the Kurds. Isn't that the UN for???

Trust me, the US is losing allies left and right.

Furious Republicans prepare to rebuke Trump on Syria

US Republicas join Democrats to blast Trump's Syria withdrawal

"...A majority of Republican voters, 59 percent, said they favored keeping some military presence in Syria. Most Democratic voters agreed, with 60 percent saying the same. Fifty-nine percent of Independent voters want troops to remain in Syria, while 41 percent prefer withdrawal...."
