The commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces told a senior US diplomat, "You are leaving us to be slaughtered," demanding to know whether the US is going to do anything to protect Syrian Kurds as Turkey continues its military operation targeting America's Kurdish allies in Syria. "You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered," Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi told the Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, William Roebuck, in a meeting Thursday, according to an internal US government readout that has been obtained exclusively by CNN. "You are not willing to protect the people, but you do not want another force to come and protect us. You have sold us. This is immoral," Mazloum added. He insisted the US either help stop the Turkish attack or allow the Syrian Democratic Forces to strike a deal with the Assad regime in Damascus and their Russian backers, allowing Russian warplanes to enforce a no-fly zone over northeast Syria, thereby denying Turkey the ability to carry out airstrikes. The US does not want the Kurds turning to the Russians, administration officials say. "I need to know if you are capable of protecting my people, of stopping these bombs falling on us or not. I need to know, because if you're not, I need to make a deal with Russia and the regime now and invite their planes to protect this region," Mazloum said.

Secretary of Defense Mark Esper said Friday the US is not abandoning its Kurdish allies, although he made it clear the US military will not intervene in the fight. "We are not abandoning our Kurdish partner forces and US troops remain with them in other parts of Syria," Esper told reporters at the Pentagon.

Reports from northern Syria say that Kurd Hevrin Khalaf, Co-Chair of the Syrian Future Party, has been killed by shrapnel from a Turkish artillery shell.

Not to detract from the gravity of the present day betrayal of the Syrian Kurds by the US Government, this reversal of policy towards the Kurds in general has a long tradition in US-Kurdish relations. The link is for context.

My late mother was very astute; she often said that the arbitrary lines defining nations in the Middle East would continue to cause problems for generations. She also opined that when borders did not follow natural terrain features, (rivers, mountains, etc,) trouble would follow. She laid the blame on the British Empire at the conclusion of WW1 for dividing the Ottoman/Arabian lands.

There is a scene near the end of the David Lean film, “Lawrence of Arabia,” that shows the problems in the Arabian world. The allies have been victorious and “Lawrence’ was assigning different logistical agencies to the various tribes. The waterworks went to this tribe, the electrical power plant went to another, the transportation was assigned to yet another. There were other public works that went to other tribes.........within a short period of time the animosities between the tribes took over and the water was shut off, the electricity was shut off and the entire city came to a standstill........

It's a tough neighborhood, but the colonizers didn't help much. They knew that a divided ME was much more pliable than a peaceful ME.

But was likely a boon to the Empire.

The democrats are. I personally see it as a necessary step to return refugees to their homes. Plus the PKK are terrorists. Obama just gave them a new name to get around the ban on working with terrorists because he had no other choice after Assad made it either him or ISIS who would be ruling Syria.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement made in 1915 and agreed to in 1916 was the deal between the UK and the French on how to divide up the Middle East post WWI. That agreement is the source for the very artificial frontiers in the Middle East and the western Iranian frontier. Idiots ignorant of the facts on the ground, with charts and rulers dividing the world of real peoples and nations for imperial benefit, what could go wrong?

The troops were not pulled out. That is why they came under bombardment by Turkish forces -- they are still there. They were simply told to step aside.

That film took (to phrase it kindly) a helluva lot of poetic license with real events.

There's actual no record of the depicted Arab fracas (at Damascus) just as Faisal wasn't the middle aged man portrayed but in his early thirties at the time and decidedly not the backwards Bedouin chieftain portrayed, but a highly educated cosmopolitan who'd served as an MP in the Turkish parliament.

No, the subsequent disunity was down to the occupying powers (France and Britain) carving the area up in a manner best serving their individual interests.

What you see it as has already been aptly described as a load of bumpf in other threads.

Your constant garbage over the whole thing being about returning refugees to their homes doesn't gain any quality by you constantly repeating it.

As has been pointed out to you all over these forums by now, the refugees in Turkey are to their greater extent from parts of Syria not in Rojava, those having fled from there having mostly returned after the YPG-led forces ousted the IS forces that had set them to flight in the first place.

As can by now not be pointed out often enough

This will be a dark time in American history. We look weak, we look scared and we are not only permitting the genocide of long time allies but we are giving a wink and a nod while the perpetrators commit these atrocities.

Our government is being run by an inhumane monster. And is being supported by different groups of the very ignorant and full of denial and the incredibly ugly trolls that welcome our slide from being the shining city upon a hill.

I weep for our nation.
