Turkey begins military offensive in Syria

10/9/19
Two civilians were killed and two others injured in the Turkish aerial bombardment on the village of Misharrafa, west of Ras al-Ain, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) tweeted. Turkish artillery shelling is targeting areas near the Bouzra dam in Derik, which provides water to hundreds of thousands of civilians in northern Syria, according to the SDF. The bombardment has also hit civilian homes in the village of Sikarkah, in eastern Qamishli, the SDF said in a post on Twitter.

It is absolute gridlock here in northern Syria, near the border with Turkey, as people try to flee to safety with little idea of what the Turkish military has in store for them. For civilians living in this Kurdish stronghold, it's their worst nightmare playing out before their eyes. There was a hope up until the last minute that perhaps the US would stand in support of its Kurdish allies and prevent this incursion from happening. But now there is widespread fear of what Turkey -- which views the YPG-controlled zone as an existential threat -- will do next.

So far, Turkish airstrikes have largely hit Kurdish military targets, but once you have mortars flying, there is always a potential for civilian casualties. We witnessed what appeared to be six different strikes and a fire at what locals told us was a cotton factory.
Chaotic scenes are unfolding now, with roads choked with hundreds of fleeing families, motorcycles piled with five to six people, mattresses strapped to cars. Thick black smoke can be seen rising from a number of different areas. People don’t know where they will go, where they will sleep tonight, or what they can expect from this Turkish operation.

The looming slaughter is exclusively on Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The SDF in Syria has suspended all military actions against ISIS.

The Kurds say they can no longer guarantee what will happen to the 10,000 ISIS prisoners they now hold.

Why did Trump do this, and after one phone call? He made a world changing decision that will get thousands of people killed and reenergize Isis, and it appears he did it without thinking? What did he thing America or himself had to gain from this?

This is sick and one of the stupidest things I have ever seen an American leader do.

It will take all of a few weeks at best... the Kurds will end up with loss of life which will make Turkey happy, ISIS will gain footing and recruitment, and al-Assad / Putin will get marginal gains but still have ISIS to deal with.

Overall the region still ends up a hotbed for terrorism.

... "great and unmatched wisdom."

He is still president... more to come

Why did Trump do this, and after one phone call?
Because he's the old man at the end of the bar, who thinks he can fix all the world's problems by yelling at the TV.

I don't know if I would go that far, but yes, this is a disaster of epic proportions, which will be awful for the Kurds, beneficial for ISIS, and bad for the US in decades to come.

I am gabberflasted. How is it possible that Erdogan could possibly ignore our leaders great and unmatched wisdom freely given to him? It can't be true. Maybe it's because Erdogan, who's name Trump continuously mispronounces, has absolutely zip, 0, zilch, no respect for our fearless leader. Amazing. Maybe one of you finance wiz out there can calculate the time value of what Trump declared to America until the time when Erdogan said FU.

They are attacking the PKK.

A group that even the EU and INTERPOL considers to be terrorists and tracking down.

Spanish police arrested a most-wanted PKK terrorist on the Interpol's red notice list by request of Turkey.

Nasir Tur, a member of the PKK, was arrested during his vacation in a hotel room in southern Spain's Granada province.

According to local press reports, Spanish police busted the terrorist, 57, on Tuesday at 8.30 a.m., local time (0630GMT).

After the legal process in Spain, Turkey must provide documents within 40 days to the Spanish authorities required for the terrorist's extradition.

Spanish police are also alarmed due to the location of the arrest, as the country's prime minister Pedro Sanchez was to attend a meeting in the same hotel.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of some 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is the Syrian branch of the terrorist PKK.

Why are so many insisting that Turkey is attacking "Kurds", and not what is the truth. A terrorist group that has Kurds as it's members (as well as Turks, Arabs, Iranians, and others)?
