Defense firm Saab announces new camouflage

Saab has developed a reversible camouflage system for the protection of military vehicles and other assets.

    9/10/19
Saab says it has developed a new type of camouflage called ARCASe (Advanced Reversible Camouflage Screen emissive), with the first briefing on the new product at the annual Barracuda User Group at DSEI, London. The company says that the ARCASe offers true multi-spectral protection and gives the user complete protection, even in changeable environments. ARCASe is the first reversible thermal pattern camouflage system from Saab. It protects vehicles or other assets by masking and disrupting their thermal signature to blend in with the background. The ARCASe’s visible pattern is reversible which means it has different colours on each side allowing the user to choose which is most effective without comprising the thermal protection. “Saab has a long and distinguished history in development of camouflage systems. The ARCASe is our best camouflage for use in broken terrain and is a valuable addition to our broad camouflage portfolio,” says Görgen Johansson, Head of Saab business area Dynamics. According to the company: “Saab’s advanced camouflage technology products have been exported to more than 50 countries. Saab offers a unique package of camouflage systems and force protection solutions developed to limit an enemy’s ability to detect and engage. Various solutions and configurations are available to protect camps, vehicles as well as individual personnel in any type of terrain or environment.”
Interesting. No IR signature. I'd like to see demo's under different conditions in RL. You could hide all sorts of toys with that system.

For practical military purposes, its invisible. If a foot soldier gets within 50 yards of it he see it. But if that happens, you are in bigger trouble anyway.

Good enough for avoiding detection by planes, helicopters and vehicles driving by.

Now I would like to know what happens to the heat from those in the camo. It would not be much of problem in northern Europe or Canada for most of the year. But in other areas the heat build up in the tent could be significant I would expect

Is is also effective against thermal emissions? Example hot exhaust, people and such...

Yes, but limited I expect for exhaust. That would have to be dissipated over a larger area to be effective I believe

Generally exhaust shows up on thermal no matter what you try. The biggest disciplines taught when I was in the army was noise and light discipline, but we also had emmission discipline taught at training excercises. The idea behind emmission discipline was not so much hard coded army field manual doctrine but rather common sense, if you have a truck or a generator running, it not only made noise but left a thermal image, and if in a situation of hiding from the enemy because xyz sensitive whatever was there, you would generally keep everything generating heat to a minimum, as well as noise and light.

Just running a single generator at medium capacity would make it glow from a distance unless it was placed with something to minimize heat, and to be safe if going that far to conceal noise and light discipline would be enacted as well as emission discipline, where generators and trucks would be run at the minimal level needed using cover, and radars would be used in passive mode to prevent detection, and radio comms would be at the minimum needed to prevent an enemy from tracking the signal.

Here is the thing about "thermal camouflage". You can often find an object simply by seeing what is not there.

You simply scan the background looking for things you know should be there. And when you find the area of nothingness, that is your target. This is especially useful if you are in an area where objects in the background have a very high or low level of radiant heat.

In the example, they show it backed by trees. But notice how the rock in the foreground is almost glowing as it radiates off heat. Now imagine if the background instead of trees are more rocks. You will have this highly conspicous cool dome shapped object sitting in front of the rocks.

In order to use camouflage, you also have to know it's limits and limitations.

    50 yards? Try 500 yards.

That thing has a regular shape, very different than the background. I think even the "cammo net" that the US normally uses would be better, because it is much more random, and allows at least some of what is behind it to "bleed" through, improving the effect that it is simply more foliage occluding what is behind it. This thing seems like it would act like it does, a wall. And that naturally attracts the eye if it is in a place it does not belong.
