Pentagon drafts plans to combat hypersonic weapons attacks | Fox News

They unleash destruction traveling at five times the speed of sound. They maneuver with computerized precision while descending back into the earth’s atmosphere toward a target. Their speed and force are so significant, they can inflict damage by sheer “kinetic” impact without needing explosives.

They can destroy Navy ships, air defenses, ballistic missiles, ground targets and aircraft in a matter of minutes or even seconds, depending upon the launch point……. they kill in an instant --- seemingly coming out of nowhere.

They --- are Hypersonic weapons.
Many senior Pentagon weapons developers share a common view; hypersonics are nearly impossible to defend against, ushering in an unprecedented tactical reality bound to reshape warfare and force unforeseen strategic adaptations.
How can carrier strike groups project power within striking range of enemy targets? How can mechanized armored columns maneuver without being badly crippled by hypersonic attack? How can the most advanced fighter jets maneuver to avoid impact if there simply is no time? Perhaps satellites, ICBMs and defensive weapons such as Ground-Based Interceptors could also be vulnerable? The variables through which hypersonics promise to alter warfare are seemingly limitless. The danger is extremely serious.
The up and coming weaponry!

Should the Pentagon be thanking Russia for introducing an entire new weapons system to defend against? Sounds like time to hire, promote, and spend $.

Obama’s defense department slept through it, now we are behind.

As long as we can protect our submarines and our nuclear missiles after they are launched, its all moot.

I still can not understand why they are calling hypersonic weapons new, the nazis used them in ww2, and even then the british calculated to stop a single v2 rocket it would need to concentrate all of it's anti aircraft guns in the general path and expend enough rounds to destroy the entire nazi airforce to stop one single missile, they considered it too much for a missile that was innacurate and did not do enough damage to justify such a massive waste of lead, as well as the high probability more would be killed from falling rounds stopping the missile then the missile itself.

Fastforward to post ww2, america and russia got ahold of the v2 rocket, both built ballistic missiles based off it's design, and both made space exploration based off it's design. It could actually go to space with modifications atleast the most basic space travel, and when used as a missile it travelled at mach 5 on descent. The hypersonic missile that replaced the v2 was of course the scud series missile, more accurate but still wildly unstable, there were also icbm's with american icbm's maxing out at mach 20 in terminal phase and soviet ones hitting mach 23 in terminal phase.

The soviets even built the kh-15s missile for anti shipping purposes in the 70's that was hypersonic, not new tech in the slightest, the only major changes are trying to get them to maneuver in descent at hypersonic speeds which is an unreal task to accomplish, or attempts to make them nuclear powered which probably worked flawless in a sterile test environment but has failed in every real world test. To this day the simplest hypersonic method is to use a high powered missile that can climb high enough to avoid detection then simple use gravity to achieve hypersonic speeds.

Obama did not sleep through it, the soviets had hypersonic weapons right after ww2 and for anti shipping in the 1970's, long before obama ever became president and some of those weapons before he was even born.

Jay Leno.
