Navy scrapping touchscreen controls on destroyers after deadly collisions: report

Touch screens are stupid for navigation anyway. I can just seem in war, shrapnel taking out all touchscreens. What do you do then?

We still need manual, robust, steering, throttles, etc.

Generally part of proper planning would be backup systems, when I was in the army even with computers for everything we backed up in duplicate everything, incase internet failure, or some other failure, we had backups and backups had backups.

For touchscreen navigation, the tech should have been more proven, the soldiers using it should have been better trained, and there should have been a backup as well as a backup to a backup.

It is possible however it is much more likely that the touchscreen controls were just universally hated to begin with and the collisions reinforced that hatred.

Poor design isn't limited to cars and trucks.
I mentioned that because I've almost crashed due to the stupid automatic transmission SHIFT KNOB that Chrysler (and several other manufacturers) has switched to.

Someone forgot to tell Chrysler and the other companies that vehicles aren't washing machines, and I guess someone forgot to tell the Navy that destroyers aren't video games.

I’ve got the Dodge Ram 2013 with the rotary shifter knob. What problems have you been experiencing.

I had one that was operator headspace related. I have had the truck over 4 years and ther e have only been a few issues. One was the wiring to one of the fuel injector connectors backed out and there was a random misfire. The others have been factory reflashes of this or that system; air bags and such.

The operator error was very frustrating untilI got clued in. It seems that recently, I wasn’t getting the driver’s door fully closed. When shifting into drive or reverse the truck would move forward or backward and all of a sudden the park pawl would engage and it took me few tries to figure out that if the computer sees the door unlatched, it does’t like to engage any thing other than PARK.

Those chrysler electronic shifters are nightmares, had to deal with malfunctions throwing the vehicle in park while at highway speeds destroying their transmission, or them shutting off all power or not even knowing what gear they should be in. Now whenever one with an electronic shofter issue shows up for the 8 speeds I just send them to the dealer as they have a bunch of recalls on them because they worked so poorly. Bmw who uses the same zf electronic shoft as chrysler has often had issues where they will randomly not come out of park, making the vehicle undriveable.

In my experience electronic shifters fail at a vastly higher rate than simpler cable or mechanichal shifters, there is no solid reason on earth for those electronic shifters, nor for the electronic steering on heavier vehicles, like suburbans and silverados where a faulty g218 ground can cause the vehicle at highway speeds to jerk uncontrollably the steering wheel wrecking the vehicle.

I’m not a fan of the key fob instead of a key. If I put the fob in my pocket to go into a store and forget to leave it in the truck when I get home, I’ll usually forget the fob when I go to the garage, (detached,) and have to make an extra trip.

The missus has a 2015 Honda, also with the fob. I drove her to the grocery store a year or so ago and she had her fob in her purse.
I volunteered to gas up the car and dropped her at the market. The filling station is about a quarter/half mile from the store. I pulled up to the pump, turned off the ignition and filled the beast up. Good thing we both had our phones and she hadn't filled the cart with perishables........

Navy ships in my day (1964) had "Aft" backup steering, a small compartment where a human can go and steer manually via sound powered headsets and orders from the bridge.

Not a huge problem, just that every vehicle I've ever had was either a stick or an automatic with a shift lever! :lamo

Rotary knob - pffffttt, dumb idea. Moving a knob two millimeters to shift is, in my humble opinion, unworkable.
Cars aren't washing machines. :D

We had the "won't come out of PARK" issue the first two months we had the van but a software update fixed it and it hasn't happened since. Also fixed the faulty ground issue at the same time.
My only criticism of the ZF trans itself is that I want to get it programmed a little differently.
I want the van to kickdown better. It has plenty of power and I like to use that power.

I'd be okay with the key fob but for one thing, you should have to INSERT the fob INTO something to START and take it OUT of something to shut it off.

Am I the only one who thinks that the reason for the change is really that they were hacked or otherwise interfered with and they’re don’t want to admit it?

China has spyware components embedded in every computer, keyboard and touch screen our military had from China. This has been super hush - hush. I know someone in the military, the incredible nightmare, time and costs of it. Billions to replace it all. Vulnerable for everyone not down, and unknown how much and what information and secrets were stolen

But the Democratic Party and super rich corporations and men LOVE China - because they love their child slave labor sweatshops profits and products. The Democratic Party still demands having slaves making stuff for them for cheap - but have to use foreign tyrants as the taskmasters over their foreign slaves in other countries. They don't care about this massive attack against our military - truly MASSIVE attack.

No, they will just keep howling RUSSIA! RUSSIA! RUSSIAN! COLUSION! COLLUSION! COLLUSTION! - while the Democratic Party kisses the feet of the Chinese government and the world's super rich who use China as their most profit slave-centers. The Democratic Party has always loved slavery - and still does.

Most likely not hacked, it could be easily jammed or disabled by emp, however hacking it would be a monumental task, it most likely has to do with how poor the idea was implented vs how well the tried and true methods worked. It is likely the navy adoption of touchscren put bleeding edge over proven, and that the navy would not have had a problem if they had waited until more proven reliable tech and better training.

No EMP, as all vessels of that nature are hardened against it, same as Air Force One and pretty much any other military aircraft. Nuclear hardening isn't even a dark art.

I saw the shift knob in a Dodge truck. Wow, does that SUCK! For certain no child would EVER dare touch it and driving in the dark at night I definitely have memorized the precise location and feel of every switch and button in every vehicle I have.

Almost no vehicles even offer manual transmissions anymore. Very frustrating. Even the new Corvette is only available as an automatic - other than those ridiculous "paddle shifters."

Making up more stories I see.
You really should just stick to more believable stuff.

They are hardened but not invulnerable, and more tiny and precise circuits are more vulnerable than larger circuits, with or without shielding. However there is zero evidence of emp being used anyways so other than mentioning the vulnerability it is not much of a point, plus the ships could have if planned properly had more rigid backup controls in the extremely rare scenario someone weaponizes emp enough to harm fine circuitry or nuclear war.

The kickdown is controlled by programming to meet emissions standards as well as obama era cafe standards, or atleast come as close to cafe standards as they could as the deadline was on it's way by the time electronic shifters became the norm outside of bmw's and bentley's/rolls royce.

I never liked how those 8 and 10 speeds shifted, plus the fuel gain is minimal as we could reach 25 mpg with a truck in the 1980's with a 4 speed and a 5.7 v8 with crude throttle body. In some cases one can claim a 2019 chevy truck is much faster than a 1987 chevy truck, but in many cases it is simply over engineering to try to get everything for everyone rather than focusing on core needs.

Ever dropped a phone with an lcd screen or oled screen? Or smashed one. Most of the time they still work partially at least a good chunk of the time the will work fully in the undamaged and lesser damaged sections.

On some ships I think they have secondary backup bridges.
