Trump says US will not sell Turkey F-35s after Russian missile defense system purchase

7/16/19
President Trump on Tuesday said his administration will not sell American-made F-35 Lightning II fighters to Turkey over its decision to take delivery of a Russian missile defense system. “We are now telling Turkey ... we're not going to sell you the F-35 fighter jets,” Trump said during a Cabinet meeting. The administration — which has long threatened to block F-35 sales to Turkey should it take delivery of the S-400 — has been quiet on its plans since last Friday, when Ankara received the Russian system in defiance of Washington. Defense secretary nominee Mark Esper said on Friday that the Pentagon was aware of Turkey taking delivery of the S-400 and that its "position regarding the F-35 has not changed" but did not elaborate.

The S-400 buy also sets off a number of penalties that Pentagon leadership has said would take place at the end of the month, including moving F-35 maintenance roles from Turkey to another country and having all Turkish personnel linked to the program leave the United States. The department also last month pulled Turkish applicants from a program that teaches pilots to fly the F-35. In addition, top senators last week urged Trump to impose congressional sanctions on Turkey as part of the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, which penalizes U.S. partners that buy Russian military equipment. “On a strong bipartisan basis, Congress has made it clear that there must be consequences for [President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s] misguided S-400 acquisition,” according to a statement from Sens. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Jack Reed (D-R.I.), the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Sens. Jim Risch (R-Idaho) and Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the chairman and ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Sort of expected, but with Trumps fondness for autocrats one never knows.

Even before Trumps decision today we had this revelation yesterday.....

Erdogan says Turkey aims to produce S-400s jointly with Russia

7/15/19
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said a controversial Russian missile defence system will be fully deployed in April 2020 despite the threat of US sanctions, adding the next step would be to jointly produce S-400s with Moscow. The first batch of the Russian S-400 equipment was delivered to Turkey in recent days even after repeated US calls to cancel the deal or face punishment. "The S-400s are the strongest defence system against those who want to attack our country. Now the aim is joint production with Russia. We will do that," he said.

Not surprising in the least. Erdogan's aim since 2013 has been to steal (technology-transfer demands) US Patriot technology.

US F-35 techno-security would probably also have been imperiled.

Obama or Hillary would have handed Turkey everything we have to be used against us. Just like Obama handed Iran the nuclear bomb in a couple of year with that stupid deal.

Thank goodness. Best not to keep sending our most cutting edge technologies to be dissected by Eurasian despots.

Ohferchristsakes.
For one thing, if Iran does make nukes it'll be Trump's fault. He bailed and failed.

Putin is against it and Putin isn't going to change on this.

Turkey is meanwhile in an economic recession and its lira is taking a pounding. Erdogan in June lost the election in the stronghold of Istanbul even more severely than when he cancelled the first voting victory by the opposition. After Erdogan cancelled the narrow opposition win he got blown out trying the election again the second time.

This F-35 cancellation removes a couple of billion bucks from Erdogan's faltering economy and hits the banks especially hard. Erdogan is in a political decline which is why he keeps mumbling about the S400 technology transfer Putin won't touch. Turks can't get a cop when they need one because the national police are busy watching the Army and the Air Force for fear of another coup or coup attempt. Erdogan purged the national police, army and air force but he still doesn't know who's on his side and who isn't, to include now in Istanbul.

Next is US cancellation of F-16 upgrades and helicopter upgrades among others. Erdogan hasn't told Washington to get its nukes out of Turkey for fear it would trigger the military acting against him again. Any such directive by Erdogan would likely get Turkey suspended from Nato. Moreover, receiving the S-400 means Turkey has no defense against Russian missiles and Russian air offensive forces to include Russia's other buyers of its missiles in the ME. It might be a question of which side rises up first to toss Erdogan, the pro Russia side or the side that is pro USA-Nato.

No, it will be Iran's fault for violating the nuclear non-proliferation treaty that they signed. This is such a backwards way of thinking. The government of Iran is not some mindless force like global weather patterns. They have volition and responsibility for the actions that they take. This is no different than arguing that it was FDR's fault that the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor because his government sanctioned Imperial Japan, froze its assets ,and cut off oil shipments to them in 1941.

I disagree. Trump verbally terminated the JCPOA and unilaterally (without the other P5+1 assent) imposed harsh sanctions on Iran.

Unless you can show us the IAEA stating that Iran was in treaty violation of the JCPOA prior to Trump's declaration, then this is on Trump.

None of the other JCPOA partners - Britain, France, China, Russia, Germany, EU, UN/IAEA - agree with Trump.

Trump bailed on that agreement that you're insisting Iran adhere to. About the day after his inauguration, if I remember right.

See, there's something that spoiled children do- learn to blame others. He bailed on the Iran agreement and now it's Iran's fault the agreement isn't being honoured. He bailed on NAFTA and it was Canada's fault the new one wasn't progressing. He did absolutely nothing about his wall when he controlled the House and it became a national emergengy and the Democrats fault as soon as he lost it. He blames anyone and everyone; that's 80% of any speach he makes, casting blame.
And if this situation gets ugly it'll be Iran's fault.
