Navy SEAL Edward Gallagher found not guilty on murder and attempted murder charges

Eddie and Andrea Gallagher after the verdict.

7/3/19
A jury found decorated Navy SEAL Edward "Eddie" Gallagher not guilty Tuesday on almost all charges he was facing, including murder and attempted murder, in the killing of a teenage Islamic State member in Iraq. Gallagher was accused of stabbing to death a 15-year-old ISIS fighter in 2017 and posing with the corpse for photos. "I'm happy and I'm thankful," Gallagher told reporters after the verdict as he joked with his legal team that "it's Independence Day," his freedom coming days before the July 4th holiday. "Suffice to say, huge victory, huge weight off the Gallaghers, huge victory for justice," Gallagher's attorney Marc Mukasey said adding that his client cried "tears of joy, emotion, freedom, absolute euphoria and proud of the process."

Jurors did find him guilty of the seventh charge, posing for a photo with a casualty, considered the least egregious of the crimes, which carries a maximum prison sentence of four months. "We have a sentencing to do, but the maximum sentence of what they’re about to sentence him on is much less than the time that they’ve already had him in the brig," defense attorney Tim Parlatore said. "So he is going home." Nearly a dozen members of Gallagher's platoon testified against him, revealing that nearly all the platoon members posed for photos with the dead prisoner and witnessed Gallagher read his reenlistment oath near the body, actions prosecutors said proved that Gallagher was "proud" of his actions. Perhaps the biggest bombshell in the case occurred on June 20 when Gallagher's colleague, Special Operator 1st Class Corey Scott, admitted to asphyxiating the ISIS fighter back in 2017, contrary to the testimony of at least seven other SEALs who said Gallagher stabbed the ISIS fighter after medics administered treatment to him, ultimately resulting in the teenager's death.

Gallagher will be home in time for the local 4th of July parade. The jury rendered its verdict, and justice has been done.

How to get away with a War Crime, something needs to be done about a witness with immunity gas lighting the jury.

A dozen testified against him, a DOZEN SEALS.

What kind of horrific precedent will this set, I bet it will be much more challenging for fellow soldiers to get immunity now.

So if you serve long enough you should be able to get away with whatever war crime you want? The fact that Right Wingers have made this a polarizing issue only makes war crimes more likely to be committed, knowing they'll be celebrated especially.

Dude, you need to stop the amateur hour approach to debate. Nothing you wrote could be applied to what I wrote or this thread.

Your article genius.

Gallagher, who heroically risked his life and served his country for 20 years in the Navy, should never have been charged. He spent nine months in prison awaiting his trial and was treated disgracefully by the Navy he so loyally served.

When our enemies mistreat our troops we will have no principle with which to object

Was that a brilliant move or what? Confess to the crime in question after you've been granted immunity in return for testimony, and you and the accused both go free. Sweet. Is this what honor means in the military these days? I thought we strove to be better than that.

ISIS member taking a dirt nap.

How refreshing.

I have no sympathy for ISIS or other terrorist, but posing with a dead human body like it was nothing more than posing with a fish you caught demonstrates his mentality, viewing the enemy as sub human.

Such a mindset has potential negative implications beyond the battlefield.

False dilemma.

1. Our "objections" on principles has had little to no effect on enemy combatants who do not agree with or adhere to such principles.

2. His actions were properly reviewed under the UCMJ, and that court of jurisdiction found insufficient evidence to convict on the alleged crimes. That means we did not tolerate anything.

Just because some may disagree with the verdict does not necessarily mean justice was not served.

15 Year Old Brain Washed kid who was in the care of our military. Do we not care about the laws of war now? Perhaps these guys should be tried from now on by the ICC if the military's justice is not suitable for prosecuting war criminals.

Posing after murdering a brain washed 15 year old boy.

You only play lip service to the rule of law, the Medic gas lit the jury after getting immunity. You're okay with a loop hole for war crimes, and justice was NOT served.

Excuse me, but were YOU there? Either at the scene of the alleged crime, OR sitting through the trial and listening to all the evidence?

Or is it your reading of the merits based entirely on the media's presentation of the case since it was first reported which colors your viewpoint?

There was a trial, he was not convicted based on the available evidence. Once again, just because YOU do not agree with the verdict does not mean justice was not served. :coffeepap:

Do you seriously think the Medic plugged the breathing tube for a second? Let's not be stupid here, he got away with murder and you're okay with that, even though the processes were manipulated by the Medic getting immunity and then confessing.

In theory, this could be used to get every war criminal out of trouble, by just having a comrade who has immunity say that he did it, and that is sufficient to produce "reasonable doubt" not to convict.

There is no doubt he stabbed this boy through the heart, and even posed for pictures afterwards and recited his enlistment pledge. Now he's free and you call that justice. You don't know the meaning of the term.

15 year olds kids gang bang every day right here in the USA killing other 15 year old kids and not a whisper or comment from the cry babies on here.

So tough ****!

There's the whataboutism. Yes, liberals say nothing about gun violence and inner city violence... You're being an apologist for a war criminal.

He was found not guilty.
Because of the Medic's lies, gaslighting the jury. The judge should have thrown it out and had a retrial.

So you are still spreading falsehoods.
You're the one believing falsehoods. Just because there was a miscarriage of justice doesn't change the fact that his knife ended that 15 year old's life. You all know that, you're just fine with it because you think it was okay for him to kill the kid. You all continually argue as much. I think if the US military cannot hold our soldiers accountable, then the ICC should.

He was found innocent and you can't stand it.

Too bad.

I care about Justice, and you don't. You're fine that he got away with it, and you'd probably be fine if more did as well.

About a dozen Seals testified against him, and this was not a limited incident for this guy. You're ethically bankrupt and divorced from reality.

No court can find your innocent. He was not guilty because of the testimony of the Medic, that they couldn't conclude beyond a reasonable doubt that he was guilty of the charges. The Medic said that he only did it because he was granted immunity. This is not honor.
