There were decades of pictures of only white men. It is truly a case of "you've come a long way, baby" for this bastion of privilege and prestige to have so many people in the class who wouldn't have been considered for admission to West Point 50 years ago.
And that was how long ago? The first black man to graduate from Annapolis was in 1949. The first from West Point was in 1877. Women at Annapolis in 1972, at West Point in 1980.
Even the most recent of these events was almost 40 years ago.
One thing that bothers the hell out of me is that myself, I only see "Green". In the military, there is no color, we are all the same. I only barely notice gender, mostly because I have to segregate them. Otherwise, they are the same as anybody else.
Take a picture of my section at my last unit, most would likely have seen "4 white guys, 1 white gal". Never mind that such would have been grossly untrue (only 2 of the 5 were actually "white"). In my current section, most would probably be confused. 1 white guy, 1 Indian (India), 1 Indian (America), 1 Filipino, and 1 black guy. The black guy and I have almost the same complexion, and with selection of background I could probably make us both pass for white in a photo. The guy from India would probably look like he was Hispanic.
To me, none of that ever mattered. We are green, wear the same uniform.
This is why I simply can not understand the way that so many obsesses over such a stupid thing such a race, or where our great-great grandparents came from. It is all stupid, and petty, and I do not even see the point discussing it.
