Happy V-E Day.

Today May 9, 2019 marks the 74th anniversary of the Surrender of Hitler's Nazi Germany to allied forces in Europe.
Actually German forces had surrendered on May 7, 1945, They officially met with allied representatives to sign the surrender papers on May 9th, 1945.

V-E Day 1945: The Celebration Heard 'round the World
Significance of V-E Day For just over five years and eight months a war had been raging in Europe that began with Germany’s invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939. By the summer of 1941, the military of Germany’s fascist dictator Adolf Hitler had conquered or subdued virtually all of Europe from Spain’s eastern border to the western border of the Soviet Union.... V-E Day was observed on May 8, 1945 in Great Britain, Western Europe, the United States and Australia, and on May 9 in the Soviet Union and New Zealand.

What a pleasant departure from the usual pearls from your keyboard...

What departure?.. I was being sarcastic that even the Media has forgotten to mention this anniversary. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died during those years to make this world safer, yet today we are caught up in trying to destroy America and parse the meaning of the word "Spy".....

Other than my post who else made the effort to commemorate this date?

Want a pat on the back? You learned sarcasm at the same place as our “Dear Leader.”

No Need to do so. The idea that WWII means so little today is fact enough to show we may soon be repeating the same mistakes soon again.

Why is the GOP trying to destroy American by lying about legal, court-ordered electronic surveillance?

What "mistakes"?

None of which took power in the US......so what is the “we”?

Seems that both Bernie Sanders and now Jerry Nadler both card carrying DSA members are leading the charge.

DSA was founded in 1982 from a merger of the 5,000-strong Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee (DSOC) and the 1,200 to 1,500 members of the New American Movement (NAM). The leader of DSOC was Michael Harrington, whose 1962 book “The Other America” is credited with being the inspiration behind President Lyndon B. Johnson’s “War on Poverty” initiative known as the Orwellian-sounding “Great Society. ”While DSOC could claim a few genuinely anti-communist old-time socialists in its ranks…

No, the DSA are not “communists”. Hysterically screeching “communist” at everyone to the left of Francisco Franco is something conservatives seem to dearly love and is also not based in any sort of reality

Do you have any even slightly credible sources? Unhinged CT fairy tales don't cut it.

The third one being metaphorically speaking of course given the thread is an abortion already, so to speak of course.

The subject of the post is Today in History and the end of WWII in Europe. Trolls that attempt to deflect the issue to Democrats and their switch to Communism (Marxist Socialism) should be notified by the moderators.

Self aware much? Might want to reread your post #12, before you go all “deflection!”

Clue: once you post, you can’t steer the thread; gotta let it find it’s own level.

EDIT: also post #14...

We should express our thanks to the millions of American, British, French, Polish, Yugoslav and Soviet soldiers/partisans who gave their lives to bring an end to the Fascist Reich.

Oh, so you are throwing a tantrum because people pointed out that Democrats aren't communist. Noted.

It wasn't May 9th or even the 8th but it was a parade march of US troops through Paris four dayze after the German garrison had surrendered.

On 29 August 1944, the U.S. Army's 28th Infantry Division -- the 28th Pennsylvania -- which had assembled in the Bois de Boulogne the previous night, paraded 24 abreast up the Avenue Hoche to the Arc de Triomphe, then down the Champs Élysées. Joyous crowds greeted the Americans as the entire division, men and vehicles, marched through Paris on its way to its already assigned attack orders against Wehrmacht positions northeast of the French capital.[18]

PARADE OF US TROOPS - PARIS - SOUND - Pathe - AP

U.S. Troops march to Champs D' Elysees past General Bradley [3:45; 4:30; 5:30]. Tanks pass Arc de Triomphe and along road. Yanks spread right across road - marching. March with Arc de Triomphe in background. Two U.S. flags and one French. Division commander and principal staff march front center. Various American officers. Parading Americans run past camera due to new orders to deploy forthwith to northeast Paris.

I'll take this any day over the over hyped German marches. This is real. They don't like fighting, they aren't polished to look sharp etc..No they came in fighting and went right into fighting on the northeast of the city. They don't think they are super men, superior race or any of that crap. They just did what was asked of them and many paid the ultimate price for liberty, freedom and the pursuit of happiness for the world. Eventhough they didn't think it, they truly were super men! God rest their soul in peace! Hurrah!!

Crazy stuff. You leave one battlefield success to parade through Paris to show Parisians and the world the city is liberated then suddenly you have to haul ass to the other side of the city to engage the Germans again. Which helps to make clear why these magnificent soldiers marching weren't in much of a celebratory mood or demeanor. Still this huge division of 21K infantry showed superb soldiering by marching in perfect step and maneuvering the streets and roads like pros even though they hadn't marched in step or in a parade or to band music since basic back in the States. They even executed oblique turn movements which have pretty much gone out of fashion in the US armed forces.

NO! This is not the proper place to discuss the issue. If you want to discuss it, begin a new posting specific to that issue. Trolling the 74th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe is not the place....

Yes, the parade in Paris France was the celebration of the freeing of Paris from the clutches of the Nazi's. We did the same in Holland, Rome, Sicily, and North Africa during WWII. It's notable that you have never been in the military. During basic training as part of marching drill, oblique turning movements are still used.

Individual Drill - Commands
Sep 17, 2018 · Marching Basics. For turns, the preparatory command and the command of execution are given as the heel of the foot in the direction of the turn strikes the ground. When making turns in a single formation, the preparatory command is given as the heel of the one foot (left or right depending on the command) strikes the ground,...
