York's story is compelling in so many ways!

He was a man of great religious conviction, many failings, a contemplative sense of duty and tremendous bravery. He was also a humble man, as are many of the CMOH recipients. His story is one that was taught to me by my father and his father as a lesson regarding manhood.

York's life story, as well as the life story of Desmond Doss, also shows us that there can be both strongly held religious belief and service to country in the military. Both earned the MOH while keeping allegiance to their faith, serving their country while ricking their mortal lives, and honoring their oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States from foreign enemies.

Amazing stories of sacrifice without concern for self or material reward.

What all men should strive for.

Yes he was. When I watched the movie with Gary Cooper and two of York's superiors trying to make sense to him using the Bible, I was yelling at the TV, "Read to York from Romans chapter 13!"

"Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities..."
