Oceana it is, in Virginia.
The Super Hornets were drawn from four strike fighter squadrons at Oceana.
F/A-18 Super Hornets from Strike Fighter Squadrons (VFA) 31, VFA-32, VFA-87 and VFA-105 honor the late Sen. John McCain with a fly-over of the United States Naval Academy during his burial service, Sept. 2, 2018. The aircraft were in missing man formation, which consists of four aircraft in a formation shape of a "V" with the right arm, from the pilots' perspective, longer than the left. When the "V" passes over the ceremonial site, the aircraft in the "ring-finger" position pulls up and leaves the formation to signify a lost comrade in arms. Navy Body Bearers of the Ceremonial Guard at Washington Navy Yard move the casket of the late Sen. John McCain from his processional hearse to the United States Naval Academy Chapel, Sept. 2, 2018.
And yes -- agreed -- the missing man formation flyover at a full honors funeral is powerful.
U.S. Sen. John McCain was honored with the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal for the exceptional voluntary contributions he has made to the nation’s armed forces during a special Salute from the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Mark Milley, Nov. 14, 2017 at Conmy Hall, Ft. Myer, Va.
“I have been blessed to witness the extraordinary heroism of ordinary men and women who have answered the nation’s call to serve,” the Arizona Republican and retired Navy aviator said. “Tonight, we honor our service members, veterans and their Families and we pray for the protection of all those still serving in harm’s way.”
(So, now we know who Gen. Milley the Boston native voted for and good for him that he voted. Perhaps ironically former SecDef Robert Gates rang up Obama to choose Milley as CSA so it looks definitely like there's some justice to be gained by voting no matter who you vote for. For Army generals anyway. Or one of 'em.)
Although Patuxent River NAS on Chesapeake Bay has 17,000 naval personnel and some few fighters currently in service, none of 'em are based there permanently. Currently at Pax River as it's called two F-35B are going through flight trials to join the newest British carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth next month. USN needs to show the Brits how to fight in the air from a carrier again. It's been ten years for 'em without any training of significance. So it's forward together as usual.
