WASHINGTON — If President Trump had wanted to make a gracious mention of John McCain, the ailing Republican senator from Arizona, he could have done it on Monday, when the president signed the $716 billion military spending bill named in Mr. McCain’s honor.
He didn’t.
Standing in front of soldiers and senior military leaders at Fort Drum in New York, Mr. Trump made no mention of Mr. McCain, 81, who has been one of the president’s fiercest critics but has largely been absent from the Senate as he struggles with advanced brain cancer.
The president studiously avoided reading the official name of the legislation — which would have meant mentioning Mr. McCain — during the 28-minute speech or during the signing ceremony afterward. (The spending measure is officially called the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019.)
Mr. Trump called it the “the most significant investment in our military, and our war fighters in modern history,” but did not make any reference to Mr. McCain’s military service or decades-long career fighting for the Pentagon budget.

This is a sad display for the commander and chief

This increase in spending on defense over last year's budget is about as much as Bernie Sanders' proposed tuition free college and trade schools for all would've cost, but nobody asks them "How ya gonna pay for that, comrade?"

It seems the "conservatives" can never get enough of spending other people's money, they'd just rather use it on showering defense contractors and the middle east with cash instead of spending it on actual Americans.

why would any of US expect any thing remotely resembling a gracious gesture from someone (Trump) that has no idea what that even means?

When it's all about Trump it's never about anyone else.

Trump is likely the most self centered human currently breathing on planet Earth; it would be impossible for him to be gracious to anyone .......

Because national defense, unlike liberal arts education delivered by Marxist professors (18% of social science professors openly identify as Marxist) is not a central duty of government, I think people can take out loans to Learn liberal social theory if that’s what they want to do.

Funding of trade schools is unneeded, one can take out a loan and pay it back with their future income since most trade schools have high placement rates and others have paid apprenticeships

Translation: this "libertarian" has no problem making it rain with other people's money as long as it's on stuff he wants. Always enough money for guns, never enough for butter.

Spend away, comrade. The CEOs of Boeing and Lockheed Martin really needed this taxpayer funded raise.

Trump can save his breath and speak at McCains funeral.

McCain did not draft this. From what I can see, he had little to no input on this bill, it simply had his name tacked onto it.

It is not like say the Copyright Term Extension Act, which is also known as the Sony Bono Act. That was a bill he had been working on for years prior to his death (he was even co-sponsor of the attempt the year before his death to pass a similar bill which never left the Senate).

I simply never understood the purpose of naming bills, roads, bridges, ships, or anything else after somebody who is still alive.

So I really do not see why this is an issue, other than by those who scream at anything the President does.

How many threads are y'all gonna start on this? And how many of you while ****ting yourself over this didnt even realize that not only did John McCain have nothing to do with the writing of this legislation, he didnt even vote on it?

McCain had zero input on this. McCain didnt even vote for it.

Somehow I don't think he'll be invited to do so. If I were in his family, I'd invite Melania and bar Trump.
