The 911 call caused security forces to begin a systematic sweep and clearing of the hospital. In an attempt to breach a locked door, a security force member discharged his firearm to open the door and continue the sweep, the base said. The scene has been declared safe.

I highlighted that one part because, as one of the guys who would have been doing the sweep back in the day, it stuck out to me. I don't know how things are now but back 35 years ago or so I can't even imagine the amount of grief one of us would have received if we did that. I foresee some airman have a really, really bad few weeks for pulling that stunt.

From what I see, it went from an exercise to a supposed real event. He then used his weapon to gain access to a locked room. Is that correct or did I miss something?

That's the way I'm reading it but breaching a door via trying to shoot the lock or hinges off isn't any procedure I was taught. In fact, it was pretty much the opposite of procedure.

True but things change. Back in your day how many active shooting incidents occurred?

Same same me. It was not something we were trained to do. On the other hand if you were looking for an early out ...

If it is still there I could point anyone interested to a ding on an I-beam inside the SAC Gate shack at Offutt AFB, which was the Strategic Air Command HQ when I was there. A USAF Security Policeman, who shall remain nameless, working a mid-shift at SAC Gate put a round into the I-beam in the O-dark hours one morning. I reported on the relief shift to Security Police desk the next morning for duty at another gate. Excreta was hitting the fan at guard mount that morning. :lamo We caught a lot of flack and later, training. Not shooting at inanimate things that did not pose a threat was the focus of the training. We were less than pleased to spend down time in feckin training because the nameless person shot up the gate - from the inside.

After finishing my tour in Croatia, returned to Canada, as I had retired but after I had employment with a Canadian Company, ATCO-Frontec that had a service support contract for 3 years.
So one day, an MP, giving training on pistols, 9 mm Baretta.
Well this fellow was full of himself and challenged one in the training class, I can stop that pistol from firing by the way I grasp the weapon.
He grasped the pistol, told the person to pull the trigger.

Well the pistol fired, word spread like wild fire. We saw the dumb bunny at supper, forearm all bandaged up, he was on a plane the next day.

Now if a Soldier had an AD, the minimum fine was 2000 and higher. He, well nothing happened to him.

Now I have a story about the Artillery and the near accident of firing into a German Town, that I may share later.

I remember doing a "round-count" and you better have them all, or be able to account for them.

Shooting a door to unlock it? Yeah, some airman is definitely having a bad time for a while.

We were taught that unless you can see a target or can see beyond your target to where the round may travel, to not fire in case you hit or kill something or someone you don't intend to hit.

Firing at a lock or hinges is Hollywood crap, that can lead to deflected rounds or frag from the round or whatever you hit that can hit anything or anyone, including yourself. You breach with a breach tool or HE, not a firearm.

 LOL! We should have a forum for Military Madness.

That is why military training is so often boring torture. They must train to the lowest element. Still dumbasses do crap we can't believe.

I once saw a guy put an M-2 butt on his mouth and fire a round to show how little the weapon kicked. After he returned to duty everyone called him "Gums."

Wright-Patterson has a very long history of dealing with Area 51 types of activities.

"Round Count" brings a story to mind; during my service I was proud to pull guard duty at various posts where was assigned. At Ft. Gordon (Augusta, GA) we were issued clubs for guard duty at a motor pool, one shift. It gets damn cold in Georgia in the wintertime! When I arrived at Ft. Bragg, we were tasked with guard duty at the main PX. We were issued 12ga shotguns and live ammunition. Oh, they were expecting something different than at Ft. Gordon!. The OIC of the detail let us work out the details as far as how we would cover the 24hr shift. We decided on 12/12. We were young and dumb. We were given orders not to leave the facility until she 24 hr shift was over. After my 12 hours, I jumped in the car and headed to where there was warm-blooded company waiting. (Six hour drive). What I forgot to do was turn in my ammunition at the end of my shift. Only blemish on my service file.......

Totally depends on what type of weapon it was. But we use shotguns for breaching doors all the time. Our shotguns and the rounds we use in it are designed for only that and would be pretty useless for anything else. If it was his pistol then yeah the guys an idiot. But I know I have seen Army MPs with shotguns and I would assume the AF security forces have them as well. And unless I missed it in the article it doesn’t really give much details so who really knows.
