US Navy expands hairstyle options for women

Navy - Former allowed female hairstyles.

7/12/18
The U.S. Navy is now letting women members wear ponytails, braids and locks. The Navy announced the new rules on Facebook Wednesday with a group of women who made the recommendations. The rule-change is said to be more inclusive for African American women. The navy says the new hairstyles must not get in the way of safety gear. Female sailors are also to make sure uniform head-pieces stay squarely on the head. They can also wear their hair down, below the collar of their blouse, jacket, or coat when in dinner-dress uniforms.

Welcome to the 21st century. Bout time.

I'm guessing that this still isn't allowed.

It is pretty awesome except for the fact that my hair is more than 3 inches past my collar even when it is in a braid/French braid (might be able to get away with a pony tail though). It goes almost down to my butt right now. Probably just going to keep putting it up in the braid/bun combo I've been using.

It is also command dependent, since the wording of the NavAdmin allows for COs to not allow these changes to take place, says that COs can authorize such things. It is good that they put in the clause for not allowing loose hair styles when around rotating machinery/equipment.

Each service has its own proscriptions. Some of them are for reasons of safety and whatnot, others, however, seem nothing more than ways to ensure women (or men) exhibit little to no individuality.

Overall, the services just want their members to display nothing about their heads that makes them stand out as particularly beautiful or particularly hideous. I think it has something to do with one's having a hairdo that will allow one to wear the regulation covers.

Doesn't hair braiding take a good amount of time? Kinda surprised anyone would want to bother with the effort during service.

Now I wonder, what's the point of banning a zig-zag part? Pedantry for its own point?
