The F-35 is made by Lockheed Martin Corp, with companies including Northrop Grumman Corp, United Technologies Corp’s Pratt & Whitney and BAE Systems Plc also involved. However, Trenta said she saw merit in stretching out the purchases in order to free up resources for investments in European defense projects.

Some 5-Star officials said last year that Italy should cancel the order for the fighters altogether, but Trenta made clear she had reservations about this.
“No one is hiding the fact we have always been critical ... In view of the existing contracts signed by the previous government, we are carrying out a careful assessment that exclusively considers the national interest,” she said.
The 5-Star Movement formed a populist coalition government last month with the far right League party.

Italy is one of the assembly sites for the f35

In recent history Italian governments have lasted like Chinese Food...Dont get excited.

In their history, they have lasted longer than the US.

Yes. She is making the correct decision.

1. Her country can easily rely on other NATO countries for their self-protection.

2. They need the money more for their own welfare programs.

Italy already has the Eurofighter Typhoon which is a 4.5 gen fighter, and probably a better air to air fighter. It has a higher initial price but probably a lower dollar cost per hour of flight

Well no.. you do know where Italy is and its loonnnnnng history right? :)

What? You mean Italy, which was formed in 1871 after over 1,400 years of being a piecemeal region of competing nations and city-states, in addition to having been occupied by various other nations during the past millennia?

Italy as we know of it today was formed after the US Civil War. It has almost nothing to do with the Roman Empire, or any of the various governments and principalities that existed between the two. Do not forget, most of the Renaissance happened as the various principalities and city-states were fighting against each other. Leonardo was a renowned military engineer and courted by many rulers, in addition to dabbling into things like painting.

Even the "Holy Roman Empire" which controlled much of the country from 1792-1806 was only in name. It was really an absentee rulership by Austrians.

And since 1871 they have gone through a slew of governments.

Italy is not Rome, no matter what Il Lamp Ornament tried to get people to believe.

Sigh.. so civilization, republics and an unified nation only happened after 1871? Come on.. Italy, aka the shoe, has been the centre of Republics and democracies to dictatorships spanning over 1000 years. It was based on the people on the shoe, aka those we know today as Italians... but what once was known as Romans for over 1000 years. Even the city states you mention, more than often claimed to be "Roman".
