5/9/18

A sleek new stealth fighter jet that Russia recently combat-tested in Syria took center stage at a massive military parade in Moscow celebrating the Soviet Army’s victory over Nazi Germany during World War II. A total of 13,000 troops, military police and cadets, as well as 159 combat vehicles and 75 aircraft rolled onto Red Square on Wednesday to mark Victory Day. Sukhoi Su-57 fighter jets flew overhead, two months after they were spotted undergoing “real-world” testing in Syria. The fifth-generation aircraft are billed as Russia’s answer to the U.S. F-22 Raptor stealth fighter, with first deliveries expected next year. The parade also featured an updated Buk missile system identified in the 2014 downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 over eastern Ukraine and hypersonic missiles Putin showcased in a saber-rattling speech in March. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended the ceremony as guests of honor, a year after only one foreign leader attended the parade.

An aesthetic beauty. I wonder why the afterburners are so exposed in a stealth fighter.

And it better not do a barrel roll with the rounded upper surface.

On the fence if I like this Stealth Fighter or not. Seems to be a sizable leep forward for Russia though.

That's a photo of the T-50 prototype, possibly from as early as 2011.

The Russian design is focusing on stealth generally only from the front, not the rear. How stealthy it actually is has not been reported. India is not particularly happy with the 2 seat version stealth aspects

The engines are an older design, Russia is developing new ones but will not be available for a few more years

Afterburners . To give the aircraft better weight to thrust ratio. I read that the newer Russian Aircraft have thrust vectoring...so that may be why.

Back in the 1980s , there was a Russian Mig that could just about stop in mid air at 20,000 feet and turn like a helicopter..I searched Google....And could not find the video.

Russia is developing a formidable and advanced Military. The rest of Europe needs to be watching.

The afterburners are exposed due to 3d thrust vectoring, which allows the su and mig fighters equipped with them to outmaneuver all other jets, including the f-22. The downside is for the thrust vectoring to work 3d, the burners must remain open, eleminating the possibility of rear stealth without some sort of expensive workaround.

It is a nice jet but do not expect to see many in service, especially since their other jets like the su 35 and su30 have the same maneuverability as well as the most modern radar systems and weapons russia has. The su-30mki which is used by india and is an older su fighter has been pissing off the world for years now in mock dogfights and mock missions, and on many accounts the older su30 mki beat out western competition, which may explain why they invested in the su-57 project and why they seem to prefer su and mig jets over western ones like the f-16 and the eurofighter.

Why bother to label it stealthy then? The heat signature from many angles would be easily detectable.
