The Tennessee Air National Guard colonel who led a re-enlistment ceremony in which a senior noncommissioned officer recited her oath using a dinosaur puppet has been demoted and retired.

Army Maj. Gen. Terry Haston, the adjutant general for the Tennessee National Guard, also announced in a Facebook post Wednesday that Master Sgt. Robin Brown, the SNCO whose videotaped re-enlistment ceremony created a firestorm online, has been removed from her full-time job with the Tennessee Joint Public Affairs Office and is facing other administrative actions.

Haston also said that another Tennessee Air National Guardsman — an unidentified SNCO who videotaped the event ― has been removed from his job as unit first sergeant and has been reprimanded. That SNCO will stay in the Guard.

Brown could be identified in the video because she said her name as part of the re-enlistment oath.

The effing hell were these people thinking? Going this on video and then letting it get out in the wild. There is some comment this was "made for her children" which if true the one sole copy should have gone home with her and never seen the light of the interweb, the fact it didn't says a whole lot.

Just... damn, the Re-Enlistment is sacred, it's important, you don't do **** like this.

I wasn't aware that Barney was a part of the military oath ..........

C'mon people. This isn't rocket science.

Old Canadian Military proverb- always shoot the guy in your Pl with the camera.

From what I hear this was not all that unusual. So a lot of other people need to be fired ... or the people fired here need to get their jobs back and an apology for being treated differently than all the others who get a little "imaginative" with the ceremony.

No freaking out, you don't do stupid **** like that.

Not every wrong need be or should be a firing we have to ruin your life event.

Behaving like this betrays fear and weakness.

As well a lack of humanity.

We must be better.

Rofl...every day I look around and wonder, "Is this all a big joke." when observing/being subjected to such ridiculous things in the military. Seems to me that this fits right in, lol. That said, so far as the Army goes, the person who is reenlisting has a pretty big say over where/how/when their reenlistment goes down.

This isn't a demote-worthy offense. A Letter of Reprimand would have been perfectly suitable.

Nah...this is a right call. The COL should have been kicked in the ass. So should the SNCO. He isnt administering the oath correctly to start, but that he allowed this debacle...ridiculous.

Depending on the unit, the most solemn military traditions are often met with a sense of irreverence. I once witnessed a re-enlistment ceremony that took place in the bathroom of a local bar. One person held up a flag, an officer administered the oath and the enlisted person held up his hand and recited the oath, all per regulation. It was a little weird, to say the least.

Seems like another overreaction. We get a couple a week, lately.

When fun is outlawed, only outlaws will have fun.

The guy officiating was apparently alright with it, and it says nothing about her sincerity re: the oath itself.

I'd wager there's a far larger number who simply mouth the words and get it over with, and then go on to violate that oath every which way.

Need to focus on the profiteers in the military. This is small potatoes.

Oh ****, did I say too much (or say it wrong?)

Am I fired?

Now Now, let's not have any of that....Humans are going to be made ready for UTOPIA come Hell or high water....

You and I agree on very little...but here we are in complete agreement.

Nope. I agree with what happened to him.

Why?

1 - I'd say chances are high that this is not a one-off, that the colonel probably had done stupid crap before this, and this was the log that broke the camel's back.

2 - Both the colonel and the SNCO should have known better, because if crap like this were to be tolerated, then how long before we have, say, nude reenlistments? The military had to take a hard line on this one, to make doggone sure no one else even thought about making a children's joke out of something meant to be deeply solemn.

Besides, the idiot still got to retire. If anything, he should be thanking his lucky stars that he's still got his retirement! I remember how one E-8 popped positive for marijuana three weeks before retirement...and he lost it all. We all felt so damn sorry for his family (because they lost their medical coverage, too)...but not a single one of us felt a shred of pity for him - he knew better.

Was it in the PI? Just wondering....

To a degree, yes. The last time I did it was in 2012, and I requested it to be done at the repelling tower. And that is where I did it. But at the bottom with the respect it deserved. Not doing some yahoo thing like half way down (which somebody suggested by both the Lieutenant and myself shot down).

Ironically, I first read about this about an hour after I re-enlisted this weekend. And I was both livid and disgusted. I have done it now a total of 6 times, and each and every time I took it completely seriously. Such an event is not to be mocked. It makes me wonder how seriously they take the rest of their service and commitment. And does indeed show a serious lack of character.

Good thing the chain of command didn't overreact.

Oh, they easily could have. The 2 individuals could easily have been charged with UCMJ Article 83, Fraudulent Enlistment.

In addition there is Article 84, Effecting a fraudulent enlistment. Article 88, Contempt towards officials. Article 89, Disrespect towards a commissioned officer. Article 92, Failure to obey an order or regulation. Article 98, Noncompliance with procedural rules. Article 107, False official statement. And finally Article 134, for improper behavior and other offenses).

And all of those are very serious charges. Frequently resulting in a Summary Court Martial or higher.

The First Sergeant who filmed it could face Articles 98 and 134. One of the main jobs of a First Sergeant is to ensure compliance with rules and regulations, and he obviously did not do so in this instance (and seemed to be a willing participant).

Oh, these people could literally have had the book thrown at them for what they did. They disobeyed so many regulations that it is not even funny. So they are actually getting off very light. No punitive actions, only administrative ones. One is forced to retire, one is relieved of his position, and the last is being removed from her "active duty" position and returned to the Reserve commitment. All 3 will be able to retire, without being punished in any measureable way.

If I was in a position to judge what happened administratively, I would also determine that the oath was improperly administered, therefore invalid. And the enlistment rendered void, placing in a permanent bar on enlistment so the gal had to leave the military at the end of her current contract.

Oh, it is funny. Hilarious even.

When I re-enlisted I did in front of a SHARP poster with my PL before I rolled put for Hurricaine Harvey relief. I signed the contract on the back of my battlebuddy.
