US can't stop hypersonic weapons, Air Force General says | Fox News

Missiles that spit out warheads traveling up to 20 times the speed of sound and with the ability to perform elusive acrobatics may be too much for U.S. defenses to block.

That's according to the head of the U.S. Strategic Command, Air Force Gen. John Hyten, who testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday (March 20).

I would think that our current or planned anti-missile systems could handle this weapon system. But I thought the Cold War was over.

Kinzhal is Russian for 'dagger.'

The Military men have been warning for well over a decade that we are losing our advantage rapidly, a problem that got a lot worse with the abuse Obama and Congress heaped onto the military, and arguably Bush the Younger with his debacles in Iraq and Afghanistan as well.

It is time for America to wake up!

The real threat is lack of a countermeasure. If they shoot we shoot. If they get counter measures to our missiles, we lose.

I don't really feel these hyper sonic missiles are all the big of a deal if China and Russia have them. If Iran or NoKo gets them, then yeah we got problems.

MoD: Russia's Newest Hypersonic Missile Capable of Destroying Aircraft Carriers

Russia's deputy defense minister has offered new details on the new hypersonic missile announced by President Putin in a recent speech to lawmakers.

The Kinzhal hypersonic air-launched missile system, capable of rendering useless all existing and prospective anti-missile systems, is also able to destroy large, moving sea-based targets such as aircraft carriers, destroyers and cruisers, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov has confirmed.

Russia could do something like that for a while, just through a different means. Jedbaron in another thread pointed out the kh series missiles, and after researching specs, they can easily devastate aircraft carriers. They were air launch and climbed to 40k meters altitude, then dropped straight down on their target at mach 5, and mach 5 is extremely difficult to even touch with defense systems, plus the fact it exploits blindspots in radar and anti aircraft guns.

For every measure there is a countermeasure, rest assured, and I'm sure DARPA is working on them. But when all else fails, Putin is still up against MAD and, despite that acronym, he is not crazy enough to launch a first strike that would end with WWIII. The kh-15 can destroy carriers without nuclear weapons though. Hyspersonic weapons do not nor claim to invalidate mad, what the russians are doing is enuring it is still effective against any missile defense that may render mad useless.

Russia and China is treaten for USA and NATO in Western.

Be skeptical.

Russia and China are both prone to announce ultra-tech breakthroughs that never see the light of day, or which are limited to a few cranky prototypes. The money to deploy such weapons in any quantity is a problem for both countries.

I'm not saying we don't "honor the threat" and work on effective countermeasures, but still... a measure of skepticism is entirely warranted.

We should always be ahead of the crowd.

New Russian intercontinental cruise missile may endanger US national interests
