The heavy losses suffered from pro-government units that tried to attack the Syrian Democratic Forces last Wednesday.

About 500 soldiers and 30 tanks and artillery systems tried to advance on the left bank of the Euphrates River in Khusham near the rich oil fields. The attackers were defeated by the coalition forces led by the Americans.

As it became known, the attackers were the Russian contractors from the so-called "private military company of Vagner".

As a result of the coalition attack, 215 people were killed so far, many were seriously injured. These are the most serious losses suffered by Russians since the beginning of the war in Syria.

Such a serious defeat also led to a significant drop in morale. As it became known from the telephone conversations of the contractors, many of them are drinking now and are thinking only of how to return to their homeland.

Hmmm, it's interesting that the Russians are following suit with the US in hiring mercenaries. The Russian version of Triple Canopy and Xe?

Russia has about 10 large PMC (kontraktniki/contract) outfits. Wagner is probably the largest. Kontraktniki are used in Transnistria, Chechnya, Ossetia, Syria, and anywhere the Kremlin seeks deniability.

In eastern Ukraine their (Wagner) main function is to provide security for officials of the Kremlin's puppet regimes (DNR/LNR).

I wonder who provides security for the US puppet regime there?

I saw the headline and thought russia would not attack the kurds directly, they are aiding their victory, and thought syria would not attack the kurds directly, atleast not until isis and other groups were wiped out, because the kurds have helped assad by fighting his most powerful enemy in the region.

Then I read contractors and thought ok russian contractors. The russian military has good fighters but their roe are extremely lax vs americas, now add in contractors, and I imagine some russians with vodka in one hand and an ak in the other saying they got towels on their head lets go shoot em up. after the fiasco with blackwater for america, I can imagine the russian contractors would be far less disciplined or rational.

There are no Ukrainian government officials in the Russian occupied portions of Luhansk and Donetsk (collectively called the Donbas) oblasts or in occupied Crimea.

In the remainder of Ukraine, presidential/legislative elections were held in 2014.

But you know all of this. As is typical, you always revert to your CT core beliefs.

Ethnic stereotypes are OK now?

Are you telling me you did not think the same when you heard private russian military contractors?

You have a misconception about Russian mercenaries. They are, as a rule, battle-hardened fighters, like each of which stands a whole unit.

Nope...didn't even occur to me. Though I won't say you're wrong, just that I thought we weren't supposed to stereotype.

CT skepticism would be more accurate. It's good for ya'

What battle hardened? the last major war fought by russia was in afghanistan, and that war stopped when the soviet union collapsed. So unless the russian mercenaries are battle hardened in russias minor conflicts or non existent wars, I would have to guess the russian mercenaries are in their 50's and 60's by large given the timeframe of their last major conflict if you call them battle hardened.

The most recent wars, that led by Russia - Checnia (twice), Georgia, Ukraine (still going on from 2014) and Syria (lasts already for several years).

One of those I would consider a longer term conflict, georgia was a very brief conflict , ukraine has had russia occupation in the occupied area however there is not much evidence russia is fighting that war so much as pro russian rebels in ukraine are backed and armed by russia, syria has not had much direct fighting involving russia either, as russia has played a major role in air campaigns and support, and their role on the ground was tiny by comparison.

So pretty much chechnya would be the closest to being battle hardened of their recent wars, unless they are hiring pro russian ukrainian rebels.
