Can someone here tell me why we need more money invested in our military?

Haven't we've seen some of the results that this cost cutting training in the Navy, running into other ships?

Not sure we want to keep doing that. I think I'd rather spend the training dollars to keep that from happening.

Then again, ships have been running into other ships for centuries. Sometimes **** just happens.

While true, on rather rare occasions, and especially rare with a professional navy.

With the recent regularity of collisions I'm rather skeptical that it can be dismissed so easily.

Having converted the seaman training from hands on to computer based, I think we might be missing the value of the hands on training.

You do realize how expensive much military equipment is.....right?

Yeah. What did that other thread say, $24M for two fridges for Air Force One?

Do we need a strong military? Yes. We are the world power and that puts a target on our back.

Does our military need to be as large or expensive as it is? Absolutely not. We would be in not one ounce of more danger if we spent 2/3rds as much money on our military. The only reason we do spend so much is: lucrative contracts are ways off securing political funding, once a job is created by the military no congressman will vote to kill it in his own district, and stupid Conservative blustering because it appeases their base after they've told them our military is crumbling and we are in existential danger.

I'd rather us not be caught with our pants down.

Sure, but you don't need to wear 10 belts to ensure your pants don't fall down. Our military is the equivalent of wearing 10 belts

This is what happens when you allow it to degrade.

The military must be perpetually degraded then. The ratio's have been similar since after Vietnam.

Which humanitarian missions should the US military be exempted from? Let's start there and consider Puerto Rico as the thought experiment.

Well first there has been many times when this country thought we needed way smaller militaries. Times when our military weren't massive not even large. You match the military to the threat, in that case we could cut our military in half. I'm always amazed when people support buildup in military with massive investment and then say that it's smaller then what we pay for helping the needy the old and the sick. It says all that needs to be said about the commenter. We will now hear about the massive amount of cheaters there are in our programs to help people ,If you do, please bring along a study that supports what you say. No Fox, No Rush, no Heritage foundation. You get the gist.

You have no clue....

Equipment wears down. Lets me put it on ONE standard. One Special Operations unit I am aware of practices with submachine guns on the range ; and in Close Quarters Battle training. Same sub gun , and handguns --- every time. When they get the "Alert" to deploy ; they take a new submachine gun.....FRESH and UNFIRED.......every time. It makes sense.

Radios need new batteries. Tires wear out. Tracks on tanks wear out. Engines and Transmissions only get so many miles.....so new transmissions and engines need to be placed in vehicles and tanks. Air to ground rockets for our attack helicopters. Bullets. Grenades. Night Vision wears out. Weapons wear out. Clothes and uniforms need replaced. Updated equipment need bought. Research and Development needs to occur on how to improve upon or lighten what equipment we have.

No unit in America does that. And no it does not make any sense at all. In fact it would be very stupid idea. Leaving aside the fact that submachine guns need to be zeroed, no one who has any idea at all what they are doing is taking an untested, unfired weapon into combat. That's just silly.

I have been part of the Special Operations comunity for over a decade and have worked with each and every unit within SOCOM none of them do what you are claiming and I am sorry but you just lost a whole lot of credibility here.

Even simply maintaining equipment costs a lot. You can only "cut costs" to a certain extent without a drop off in quality.
You just don't get it my friend, we could spend half of what we do now and still beat any country in the wold in a war. You trying to keep a military that is to police the whole world . All that is for is to protect corporate interest abroad , and they are will to send Americans as cannon fodder for the bottom line of some company. The two companies that made the most out of the last lie was Halliburton and Carlyle Group. Do a little research. You don't need half of our weapons to protect our borders. Pay should be raised for the Military and money should be increased for the vets and every man in action should have what he needs to fight.

Of all the money spent on the military in the whole world, this countries and its allies spend 3 out of every four dollars of all the money spent in the world on the military. You must be kidding , running out of batteries. Every country haws the same battery problem , its just nonsense.

With the money we spend on the military this one country could take on the rest of the world and still win.

We have a large military because 1- we are an empire, 2- the world in many places depends or thinks they depend on our protection, 3- it’s a great jobs program in many states. Think Rome.

China has twice the manpower in their military...we need more bombs and bullets.

What if there was an alien invasion?
